I believe it's a Gulf Fritillary?  I once raised one from a cm long cat through successful
pupation.  We released him in the garden where he was "born".

You are right, it was!! And I've done the same thing with a few swallowtail butterfly caterpillars....watching them emerge as butterflies is amazing! Have you ever seen a monarch chrysalis?

I may have, when I was little, without taking much notice.  There
was a lot of milkweed around.
