Description Ah, Kirika. I couldn't resist making you bigger than your already huge self. This may be my best piece yet. The background looks amazing(So much so I couldn't interupt with with a speech bubble), the shading on her looks great, wow. Yes, she's still slim, but it's hard to tell with her breasts hanging down so low and her ample hips and rump. I love how this came out, and I hope you do too. Don't really know what to say about this(Do I ever?), so I'll fill in questions as/if they come.

How does she keep getting bigger?
Is cosmetic surgery involved, or perhaps twisted magics?
Or maybe technology?

Or perhaps mother nature.

This is likely to be as apathetically critical as I am capable, in the vain hope that such does not detract from my appreciation of your gallery in general and this piece in particular; 'tis really a most splendid piece, one that indicates any urges to resist making her bigger should be resolutely crushed underfoot, given how well this'un works.
That said, I suspect this might work "better" (a somewhat biased viewpoint... but who else's would I be using?) with more prominent outlines; the lack of a distinct nasal outline is moderately perturbing (yet echoes most manga quite eerily...) The underline of the cleavage - from the connecting ring down - is totally absent, which is a tremendous shame which, coupled, with the anterior bulge of the right breast below the minor bikini cup (excuse the drool) makes for less definition. The intersection between the thighs - again, the absence of any defining line - is well-shaded, but still somehow lacking, as is the slightly misleading shading below the right bikini strap, by the upper ring (terrific ring-bulge, incidentally...) - 'tis somewhat reminiscent of a sorely-misplaced nipple.
The "realism" of style is admirable, for you seem to be making definite progress, yet for pieces of this nature - light backgrounds and the suchlike - there is no absolute point at which light skin ends and light backgrounds begin. Naturally, it is a question of style and preference; mine simply happen to tend towards "striking", bold, stand-out caricatures (Kirika-tures?)

Of course, all that said, this is still a masterful creation; given your prolific output and the number of interesting little skews you put on each of these pieces, a few minor quibbles over style are hardly sufficient to warrant anything beyond minor griping. A very nice piece, merely the latest in what promises to be an evolution in artwork well worth observing.

Then again, this is an art critique by someone whose chosen form of expression is occasionally literary, so what the hells would I know?

I am in awe of your well written post and helpful comments. I...I'm utterly speechless. Not only do you keep it clean, curt, helpful, and nice, but you also actually know what you're talking about. I must applaud it.(Yes, I have seen that line at the end, but you definitely do.)

Now to actually comment on your content. I have sort of tried this shading with black outlines, and I personally don't really feel it works very well. The black looks out of place. To counteract that, but still have outlines to enable me to fill in, I make them out of the same color as that particular part but darker...if that makes any sense. So if you can sort of see on the full view, the outlines around the top of her head, differentiating her bangs are a darker purple than the regular purple around it. I did outline the nose, but the damn shading overpowered it. It's still there...just the same color as the shading around it. Seeing as I didn't want to use black for that, I really felt I had no choice but to leave it. Considering the shadow still indicates a nose, I felt it was fine. Maybe I should have added a lighter highlight to help out more. The shadowing for the right breast I definitely forgot to do. That's an easy fix at the moment. I've noticed it too. At this point, it's SUCH an easy fix, I wasn't worried about it. I didn't feel it was a huge issue now, since I think the size of them might help darken and blur the hard lines of them. I do think you're right about it though, they sort of fuse together at that point and it distracts. Her legs sort of fuse together at the top as you said, but as I have helped express earlier, you can see why it's like that. But I agree, it needs something to help distinguish it better. I tried to shadow things from the sun's light and where she is to it, so that's why shadows try to be toward the right, hence why I shadowed the ring. It's way to heavy for such a small ring and a bit distracting now that I take a look. I don't really see a solution for a light character with a light background though. In fact, I don't see any way around it at all for a character during the day at the beach.

I really appreciate your comments, both the compliments and gripes. I'm glad you were specific enough to help point out the flaws and explain why you thought that way. Hopefully I was able to address why some of them look the way they do, and make sure it doesn't happen again in the future. I really hope you stick around my gallery and enjoy my future pieces. Thanks again.

In a bizarre quirk of happenstance, I actually noticed the "same shade" outline 'pon closer inspection. Given that over-scrutiny is as degrading to all parties involved as under-, I try to limit such practices - perhaps as a result of all those school book analyses, so very, very long ago.
Yes, black outlines are a dyed-in-the-wool bugger; given that you have only of late discovered a style that works for you, it is entirely justifiable that many of your works will prove "works-in-progress", albeit more with regard to approach than to the individual efforts themselves.
Light skin-light background endeavours are, as with most artistic expressions, merely a reflection of experience and variations of content. However, on the assumption that your inclination for Eiken fanart is one of your driving motivations, beach pictures should hardly be a problem. The basic lineart is good, which is always a prime start; again, personal predilections coming to the fore, "fat" breasts, as opposed to inflated or implanted with something more solid, tend to sit lower on the chest cavity, with a greater distance between clavicle and cleavage... although "sag" is oftentimes quite an ugly thing to try and depict. Of course, the entire principle, I suspect, is devoted to illustrating outgrowing of garments, in which case, the under- and over-bulge need to come into play. The initial breast (or, indeed, any increase in skin and/or fat content) curve is the best indicator of this; rather than obeying the laws of gravity and curving downwards, the primary bulge originating from the area in question curves UP... before sweeping over and down, although if your knowledge of ludicrously outsized breasts (and other parts... fanboy drool) is somewhat less encyclopaedic than mine, that may make less sense. Page of Boobs - especially Jade Agata, who has just started delving into this particular genre of blubber-'n'-boobs - is perhaps one of the better examples.
Ultimately, however, it is a question of individualised taste; your artwork is geared more to your standards than anyone else's... even MINE... ) However well you do a piece, it is to your own specifications, for there will always be differences in unique appreciation. Just as bloody well, really...

Remarkable... 'twould appear my aiming for "succinct" went just a tad wide of the mark...

I think her breasts seem fat yet suprisingly perky. Yes, it's impossible, but that's why it's art.

The lines are crisp and clean which is nice and she looks so happy. The shading is very fuzzy which makes her look kind of flat, and the light seems to be coming from different directions, which looks strange, to me. It seems like it should have one light source, the sun, and have shadows and highlights off that. her standing in the middle of the page makes it look a little dull, a more intersting croppig would be nice.

vader7476 In reply to Daino-Sama [2004-11-18 05:19:37 +0000 UTC]

I understand everything but the cropping. Care to elaborate on that?

I'm glad you like the facial expression and how clean I made it. I only know 2 ways to shade a character at this moment. The one here, and cell shading. Cell shading is fairly simple and I don't really fell it makes things look as realistic as they could. I admit I'm not very good at this style that I use, but I don't really know how else to go about things. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I did mess up on the lighting. It's easiest to see on the hair. It's sort of supposed to come from the upper left and behind, but a few places like her one leg and her hair are a bit off if that were the case. It wasn't a big deal so I kept it. And yeah, I tend to put things dead center a lot. I don't know why. But I agree, it does seem dull...but there aren't many places to actually put a character ya know? I think it's equally as tacky to put them on the edges just to be different. Thanks for the critique.

When the main focus is in the middle of the page it makes the picture kind of dull. If you make it so the figure is closer to one side of the page or the other it gets more interesting, that is all I was meaning by the cropping. They just look a little better if you put them a little off to one side I think. The hair is where I noticed the funny lighting.

Your Indiana Jones piece looks pretty good. How did you do the shading on that? (I can get the line art down fine, it's the shading that gives me grief)

Thank you! I just use a hard edge brush and draw in the shadow. Then I use a smaller brush and draw in the highlight and then use a soft edge brush that is pretty see through and soften the highlights in some places.

I'm not so far gone yet that I would love an anime character. I just think she's incredibly hot, the Anime provides great humor for me, great ways to tie into my fetish art, and did I mention she's hot? I just can't wait until December so I can buy the OVA and actually know what the hell she's saying!(I haven't seen the fan subs)
