Description

Ravenous's PotAs are finally on the road! This started out just a storyline painting and then I thought I'd tidy it up and use it for Rites.

Here, Rav is still quite young (and not named Rav yet.) She's born and raised at the Napaaktuk Sanctuary, a multifunction toko-centre which handles training, rehabilitation and teaching humans how to interact with tokotas. They often hire foreign kids to work in their office, sorting papers and making phone calls; this is how Michael lands on their doorstep. He ends up leasing Rav from the Sanctuary so he can travel on weekends, but after he falls in love with Kanqisat and tokotas in general, he ends up doing a full Handler's License course so that he can keep her. This is the very first step on a long and unexpected journey...

PROMPT

15. Your tokota has faced many hardships on their road to becoming a respected leader; revisit a memory from the tokota's earlier years/puphood, or re-draw/re-write an old art piece.

--------

“Morning, Orange-Eyes.”

The small tawny tokota wakes with a start, and glares blearily at boss-human. She had been dreaming about rabbits; perhaps they will go hunting today? She rolls over and stretches her paws out as far as they will go, claws scratching against the wooden wall, and then gets to her feet, shaking dust out of her grey mane. She can smell something good somewhere close by. Meaty.

She laps up some water from her bowl, and then turns to boss-human expectantly. Is it time for breakfast? It must be years since she’s eaten. To her delight, boss-human places a goat steak in her food tray. She has to jump back quickly as Orange-Eyes leaps for it, wolfing it down eagerly. The tokota swallows the last bite, and then lets out a belch that can probably be heard all through Napaaktuk.

“Got a special job for you today, little one.” Boss-human says fondly, scratching the tokota’s ears. “Welcoming committee. We’ve got a new kid starting in the office. He should be arriving soon.”

Boss-human opens the door of her stall, and leads her out into the grassy front paddock. The sky is the colour of slate today, and the air feels damp and heavy. They have not had rain for a week, but as the weather cools, it comes more frequently. The humans do not like to be out in the rain for long; their hairless bodies provide little protection. But Orange-Eyes doesn’t mind it; it is much more pleasant than the sticky heat of summer.

Orange-Eyes is the only tokota in this paddock at the moment. She can see Salaksartok in the one opposite, digging a nice hole in the dirt; beyond him, Notch, being brushed down by mother-human. The humans don’t like to have too many tokotas out when new humans arrive. For many of them, volunteering or working here is their first interaction with tokotas, and seeing too many at once is intimidating.

After a few laps of the paddock to wake her feet up properly, Orange-Eyes wanders over to the fence, peering up the main path. Boss-human is opening the inner gates. The tawny tokota catches an unfamiliar scent as the breeze ruffles her fur. She hears voices, and then sees boss-human leading someone towards her.

Orange-Eyes wags her tail, and leans over the fence to sniff at the new arrival. He is small and carrying many bags; he must be planning to stay for a while. He is very pale in comparison to the others of his kind she has seen, and the fur sticking out from under his hat is a strange reddish colour. She decides that he is a bit odd, and that she likes him.

He glances at her, a mix of wariness and awe in his face. “They’re amazing. I mean, you know, I saw the photos, but, like…”

“It doesn’t compare to seeing them for real, does it?” Boss-human replies cheerily, reaching out and petting Orange-Eyes gently on the snout. “Well, you’ll get used to them soon enough, working here. We usually have a few out in the paddocks during the day, so you’ll see them around plenty. That’s why we require you to do your Basic Interaction Training when you take a job with us.”

She leads the way to the main building, and the small human tears his eyes away from the tawny tokota and follows her. But as the first drops of rain begin to fall, Orange-Eyes hear him mutter under his breath, they’re never going to stop being cool to me.
