question: how do you get the pixels to have that short of anti-aliasing effect? like, the pixels aren't super sharp and crisp?

I do it by hand :3c you just kinda.. experiment! this picture isnt the best example but you can see it better on some of my other pixel arts! you kinda just.. pick colors who go on a gradient and go ham!
