Description From the Desk of Frank Womack

Kaiju File #  020

Syyd (Stamion Form)

First Seen: Rural Ethiopia
Last Seen: East African Rift Quarantine Zone

Primary Range:
 Central/Southern Africa

Dietary Preference: N/A

Description:
The only one of it's kind known, the Syyd created the beast called the Bulbdozer as a more specialized means of defending itself against foes that attacked at range. This large, squat, bulbous plantiform moves about on two strong, bumbling legs ending with wide, padded feet. The body is almost spherical, almost entirely build as a crude mimic of a fanged maw, and covered in fibrous, almost metallic scales hat hold many unique properties, most distinctly the ability to deflect focused streams of energy. This large front half is counterbalanced by a long green tail, ending with an adhesive, prehensile grasping limb resembling the humble sundew, serving as an excellent, versatile instrument in combat against larger and smaller foes alike. It's collection of traits are frightening to watch in action, but many have remarked they found it strangely... cute. It's kind of got an english bulldog thing going for it.

A wonder that is, given it's largely unfriendly demeanor. From the get go this unique Syyd specimen displayed highly independent, reactionary behavior, and has proven an unruly customer to anything it deems unwelcome in its presence. There's yet to be much that didn't meet that standard, so... we just observe from afar.

Defense Protocols:
The powers that be have been very, very thorough in making sure to address any reported sightings of Syyds. And by address I mean wipe from the face of the earth. The unique properties of the Bulbdozer have made it a high priority for study, and given its largely purely self-defense oriented instincts, we are content to observe from afar as it rests in its territory. There are talks of trying to move it to the New Guinea Kaiju Habitation Zone, but the resources required would be immense and it would likely not be cooperative. What few brushes with civilization its had have shown it impervious to ranged fire, and even in close combat it can be difficult to overpower. The Serket and Errant have proven somewhat effective in making it go where it needs to, but getting them there in time is the problem. All in all, the typical policy among the AU and beyond is to live and let live, and hopefully figure out how to replicate it's mirror armor. Our mechs could really use it.

Noteworthy Abilities:

-Syyd Hive-Mind: All Syyd, with a few exceptions, were basically eusocial, obeying the chemical commands of their respective Stalk. These chemical commands were often programmed into their alien nervous system equivalents to where they could even follow them hundreds of miles away. Their programming varied based on caste and the situation. The Bulbdozer, a unique, likely prototype anti kaiju specimen, showed less dependence on this, and often entirely behaved of its own accord. That said, it is believed that it could possibly have been controlled even still had the Core Syyd put more effort in.

-Genetic Acid: Each Syyd is capable of producing a strange, quite difficult to classify substance, a bright green liquid that functions similarly to an acid, capable of dissolving organic matter into a liquid state. However, it stopped short of total destruction and only broke down the victim into a pool of DNA, and promptly stopped breaking it down and began preserving it. We lack the technology to properly observe what exactly happens here at the genetic level, the liquid seemed to do nothing once separated from its Syyd propagator. It's almost as if it was just as much a Syyd itself and operated with the same level of eusocial intelligence and discrimination. But again, we can't know for sure, and likely never will. Syyd aren't exactly being made anymore, their creators went extinct some time ago, turns out.

-Kaiju Cells: Another unusual aspect of the Bulbdozer and much of the other larger castes was the inclusion of Kaiju cells into their genetic makeup. This only started appearing in the second generation of the attacking castes, after the kaiju began fighting back in earnest. This gives them the regenerative powers of their competition, but it also caused them to become a little more on the independent side, often ignoring their chemical commands in favor of more reactive responses to stimuli. A great strength for them, but one even their superior alien tech couldn't completely overpower. In Bulbdozer's case, however, it seemed this was being used by design.

-Mirror Scales: A unique feature to this bizarre plant kaiju, Bulbdozer's front end is covered in thick plates of semi-organic material with an unusual sheen to them. These scales are extremely resistant to physical trauma, but they also can almost entirely ignore attacks from range that are energy based. Some exceptions like Giganuuk's rail gun attack have proven effective, but the fact that it takes something of that caliber to damage it says a lot.

AUTHOR'S NOTES: The struggle to push back against the Syyd was finally beginning to look possible about three days into the proper combat. The sinister plant creatures were spreading southward, not invading so much as collecting, snatching up all manner of organic life of all shapes and sizes and bringing them back to their Stalks. Seeing as how more and more deceased Rootsoldiers  were predominantly showing human DNA in their own genetic code, the exact picture of our situation was getting clearer. They weren't just wiping us out to make earth in their image, they seemed very interested in earth genetic material and collected as much as they could. And given the changes in atmospheric gas we were beginning to see, it looked more and more like they were replacing us with life that could survive in these new conditions. And not just humans, plants and animals alike, with only a bit of discrimination, were collected. We had no idea why, but their lack of need to keep people alive for these collections was good enough reason to stop them.

And on that subject, the UNDER squad at Site Duat made a few interesting discoveries there. They found, from what they could tell me, a preserved AI akin to the one Rigel  had, only it was damaged and unable to provide more than a few answers. Make no mistake though, these were big answers. We learned a lot about the Precursors in these few precious days. The speaker, referring to itself as BRONT, told them it's people were called the Gath. They had lived in technological utopia long before humanity rose up, so long that they had forgotten exactly when these great cities and ruins were built, but had been largely ravaged in their own civil warfare eons ago. Their weapons, born of technology milennia old, were not engines or implements, but living, weaponized genetics, unstoppable juggernauts designed to wreak havoc on all beneath them. As you might have guessed, we called these things kaiju. And they were a little too good at their jobs, once they destroyed their... enemy I suppose, the AI seemed very vague and lost in thought there, the beasts turned on their makers, and by the time it was over only a few of them remained.

Then... the Syyd came down from the stars, crashing into the northern hemisphere and triggering a cataclysm that forced them to take what meager numbers they had and try to destroy this new enemy. They carefully performed one last trick from their capital and home base, Site Naraka as we call it, and genetically edited and programmed the kaiju through the atmosphere to see the aliens we call Syyd as a danger and an enemy, and to engage them. This used the last of their major energy reserves, shutting down many of their ancient mega cities and foundries they needed to survive, and over time, the last Gath faded into dust, but not before seeing the potential of our hominid ancestors to succeed them. It was a jumbled, incomplete, convoluted bundle of mixed messages and lost signals, but it did at least give them an idea of what had happened. The Syyd were mostly destroyed eons ago, but one of them, the Core, their central hub, remained alive in stasis as an ice age moved in. The climate changes of old finally woke it up, and it resumed its programming for earth's conversion to something more befitting. With not much time left, they took what resources they could, allying with former enemies such as the Order of Saint George, and made haste to Site Naraka in Bhutan. But before they left African airspace they were nearly killed by a rampaging titan they hoped to never see again.

Stormback  had come ashore, and was making short work of multiple Syyd offensives. Her path of destruction was immense, dead Stamions  and Stalks smoldering into ash along many human settlements. But by the time they came upon her, she was being engaged by a more unique site, the unique Syyd called the Bulbdozer, which was giving her a real run for her money. It fought like a bulldog, clamping down on the taller kaiju's armored hide and using its tail to maneuver around her body and hold her limbs in place. No one had ever seen Stormback so completely evenly matched before, but the fight ended as abruptly as it began when, to everyone's shock, Stormback vanished into thin air. We got similar reports that other kaiju were disappearing as well, usually those considered most dangerous. And we had no idea why. It turns out that we had other parties involved in the stakes of the fight, and they were about to make a grand move.

Whaaat? Another Syyd? So soon? That's right kiddos! As I said, I've had the art ready for this arc for a while, its just finding time to finish the writing for them. The Bulbdozer here was born out of a rather 'fruitful' (I'm an adult) research binge on unusual plants last year. His design took a bit to flesh out but it wasn't too much of a rind. (I'm tired and have a headache, these bad jokes are all that's keeping me going.)

Either way, hope you enjoy some deepest lore with a side of kaiju action. We're almost halfway through this little arc, so expect some fun stuff in the coming weeks!

And another Syyd survives! Color me surprised. And I’m digging the lore being introduced as well, pretty clever to have the Syyd be waiting on Earth all along.

The second member of the Syyd that actually constitutes as a Kaiju....sort off...technically they are all kaiju in the sense they are giant monsters, but you get my point.

Much like your other designs, this one is truly eye catching, it's like a budding seed that went rouge. Also Stormy is back!, it's good to see her again.  I must say that i was not expecting how well this 'tiny (comparatively) thing fared so well against the much larger Stormback.

Now were did Stormy and company go, as i am assuming they are not dead, I wonder......

I'm glad people are liking the overall aesthetic of the Syyd, it took months of sketches and drafts to get the exact 'not entirely from earth' vibe I wanted. Most of my kaiju so far have at least a piece of that design philosophy in them, but I knew I wanted that cranked to eleven for our first true alien encounter.

It was fun to write Stormback again, and yeah, this guy holds his own pretty well, due to being built to excel against exactly what she was good at! The Syyd Hivemind is no dummy!

I look at this and I can't help but think of Audrey II from Little Shop Of Horrrors.

Well I mean I'd be lying if I said there wasn't some inspiration there.
