The darkest, sparest days of late December
Reveal the bones of the land
No foliage left to disguise black branches
No greenery to soften hillsides
Or riverbanks
Wide water, not yet frozen
Reflects the dark skies back
And swallows light within its depths
Flee, flee for home, it urges
For electric light or fireplace blaze
Flee for warmth of Southern climes
The birds, the wiser ones
Left long ago, why are you
Foolish unfeathered mortal,
Not smart enough to follow?
Flee for warmth and light and love
For I have none to give you
Say the darkening skies and darker forests
If you linger
Next winter's exposed bones
Could well be yours.
Flee!

Thank you! I appreciate it! Love the one bird (hawk) on that branch, by the way!
