you can see how much "draw" you can acheive with the metal. The blade was forged from only about 1/3 of the RR spike. It is considered a "high carbon" railroad spike, but really its borderline medium carbon (.3% carbon content approx.), which still allows for some heat treating and tempering to be effective. This is high for a RR spike, but they need to have some softness or flexibility to work properly in the tracks. Anyway, pointless rambling concluded.Related content

Thanks! Do you know if they're the high carbon spikes or not? You probably already know, but they should have an HC on the bottom if high carbon, assuming they're not too corroded or anything. I could use some more HC ones. Ah, man, I can't imagine bein' without my forge now. Must be rough. Good luck with findin' a nice spot to pick it back up again.
