Godric Gryffindor, Rowena Ravenclaw, Helga Hufflepuff and Salazar Slytherin.
Here they are young and best friends, at the beginning of their Hogwarts adventure. I do not think Sal was evil and insane like his descendants, remember it was a different time and a different society, Muggles burnt wizards alive back then!!!! His mistrust of them, at least to a certain extent, is justified I think.. You may disagree with the method but he just wanted wizards to be safe.
I may also be biased as I'm a Slytherin myself according to Pottermore..

Yeah, all he ever wanted was to protect the school, even if his methods sometimes left to be desired...
We also have to keep in mind that at the time Muggles had the bad habit of burning magical folk alive.. not very pretty.. who knows maybe he lost someone to the stake
