Description Just some quicky Elder Things. I might refine the design at some point but I'm comfortable with it at the moment.

I think atmospheric and space flight needs some pretty intrusive cybernetics, which is what caused them to forget how to get into space during the Mi-go war. Unlike many other winged Mythos species they cannot naturally push against subspace with their wings.

Traveling through space at FTL likewise requires technology. Without a hypermath processor they are forced to enter biological stasis and drift to their destination.

i feel like their shoggoths would be weirder, i imagine these blobs to have surreal colors, capable of generating any organ including weird sensory organs, not just eyes and mouths.

Totally. They're also walking(creeping? bubbling?) chemicals factories. If something organic could conceivably produce it, so can a shoggoth. Caustic acid, paralytic venom, foamy glue? All possible.

so... what are the Shoggoths actually made of?, i can imagine they are Primordial Soup reverse-engineered by the Elder Things, probably coming from Ubbo-Sathla, also that thing has stellar stone tablets, how do you explain that too?.

Shoggoths are made of biological cells, albeit extremely robust and well engineered ones. They use DNA as a computational substrate and of course as a way to store information for self replication. The self replication was intended to just be for repair but shoggoths have historically found ways to reproduce, trade information and even self-modify.

Ubbo-Sathla is actually an organic factory, used to process primordial slime into shoggoths. The star-stone tablets were brought to Earth with it by the Elder Things, although they were lost when the Mi-go forced the Elders out of the Northern Hemisphere.

I really like the idea that Elder Things are significantly self-modified. They've got the biotech know-how to be regularly using utility fog jello as construction equipment, surely they'll have attempted self-improvement at some point? The implications being that the now long-extinct, purely biological, naturally evolved proto-Elder Things bore about as little resemblance to those observed by the Dyer Expedition as you or I do to Great Ship-series "humans".

Or even that the entire history extrapolated from the lost city's murals was misinterpreted. Rather than being killed by rebellious biotech blobs, once their technology outstripped the capabilities of even their most augmented bodies, it was time to move and they all uploaded their minds into shoggoth wetware. With a variable degree of willingness, hence all the decapitations .

I actually have a theory that the Earth Elder Things were a Luddite colony. While they do use Shoggoths, AtMoM says they abandoned most forms of technology. "Β Some of the sculptures suggested that they had passed through a stage of mechanised life on other planets, but had receded upon finding its effects emotionally unsatisfying."

That's an interesting theory I've never seen before! I new that was going to be Headhunters before I even clicked the link
