What do we see when we open our third eyes?

The Beyond is a vast space of ectoplasmic clouds, only loosely bound to the gravity stretching from Earth. This environment has lead to the evolution of a vast biome of ectoplasm based life; from the tiny energy absorbing mota and the ectoplancton that graze on them all the way up gigantic predators, many times the size of any living thing native to our side of the veil. Despite having no biological relationship at all to Earthly life, these creatures look like they'd be perfectly at home in the seas of Earth. This is due to convergent evolution, the environment is similar enough to open ocean that many of the same body plans have an advantage.

One particularly interesting ability possessed by many predatory ectobiotes is that of disintegration. By directly breaking down their prey they can absorb the energy released instantly. This feeding method is also incredibly risky, as it's easy to lose far more energy than is gained. Still, it allows them to consume absolutely anything.

Although fascinating, studying these creatures is extremely dangerous. The veil of the Beyond is as much perceptual as it is physical and those who see through it can be seen it turn.
