Description

A selection of spacecraft from the years humanity took their first stumbling steps into being an interplanetary species.

While not the first craft to carry humans into orbit, NASA's Space Shuttle was easily the most iconic of the 20th century spacecraft.

Gold Star Galaxy was the leader in early space based mining operations and their revolutionary thermal exchange boosters were a large part of their success. Paired with ground-based microwave stations the TX boosters could launch orbiters at a fraction of the cost of solid rocket propulsion.

The Starhunter was the first ship built specifically to launch munitions in orbit. It was also the first class of spacecraft assembled in space after being launched into orbit part by part. While previously shuttles occasionally carried missile pods or god-rods in their cargo bays, the Starhunter was equipped with a spinal railgun, four missile pods and four point defense lasers.

The Leapfrog was used to ferry raw material between mining stations and orbital foundries. They never entered atmosphere and like the Starhunter, were manufactured in pieces on Earth and launched into space for assembly.

The Orbital Reclamation Concern formed in the wake of the first Occult War and existed for the sole purpose of clearing the debris left in the wake of that war. Their Dustbin craft were designed with heavily armored fronts in order to ram directly through orbital wreckage. It was a carrier, taking a compliment of smaller, unmanned Sweeper craft for recovering salvage.

While space tourism was common among the wealthy since the 2030s, that was largely single tourists flying along with scientific or mining crews. With the construction of the L2 Hotel in 2120 came craft to take them into orbit in style and comfort. Orbital Yachts usually followed in the wake of Dustbin in order to ensure the safety of the passengers from the debris field.

The Eldridge was a testbed of various occultech systems for the Miskatonic Subspace Sciences department, from the PKE core and ectoplasma thrusters to an early subspace tunneling drive. Its tunneling drive was so inefficient it could only be run for moments at a time and despite the shortcut through subspace it was still significantly slower than light.

The Voidwing was an experiment in using occultech metamaterials and fungi technology in an ornithoptor design actually capable of flapping its way into space. While it was generally considered too specialized, fold out "Ghost Sails" would be standard on ships going forward as both radiators and emergency thrusters.

As Earthgov pushed for space colonization after the second Occult War, FutureSoon gained the contract to construct large scale vessels to carry colonists around the system.

The Dark Horizon was the only one of its kind constructed by the EGDO. It was designed as a deterrent against "further alien aggression" and featured both the largest spinal cannon and the first force field defense system ever built into a spaceship. It never actually saw combat until the Cthulhu Wars, when it was torn apart by Star Spawn.
