Description So you know the Mourning Star saga thing I've got going on? Yeah. She was an awesome tragic villain version of Celestia in my head then there was two in the morning and my sister and Napoleon hats and it all just avalanched downhill from there. Should probably scrap this later.

I'm pretty sure it's a good sign when you can mock your own villains...

... And with that idea in my head, I still want to hug her, darn it!

A lot of people what to hug Mourning Star for some reason. She has informed me that she does not approve.

Lol. I realize that. I guess it's because you set her up as such the tragic villain, and because we know that, while she can never be the Celestia in canon, she still is, deep inside, the mare who yearns to see her sister again.

What if I offered an entire triple-layered red velvet cake? XD

It's true. Poor Mourning Star. And if you were to offer cake, well, she might refrain from killing you...this time.

At least she still has that sweet tooth. Probably one of the few moments Twilight as witnessed her NOT being the Shining Tyrant... kinda.

Please draw her again, this time the same way you draw and color your usual sketches, with her helmet, regalia and burning mane and tail. It would be awesome.

Also, ever since I seen your drawings, I have thought up a few ideas for developing her character. She seemed to have much potential for tragic character development.

One scene I had imagine, in a potential chapter of the Mourning Star saga, she is alone, in her bedchamber, after something dramatic (say Twilight and her friends escaping her and she was forced to execute one of the few loyal ponies she actually trusted as punishment for deliberately letting them go) occurred. The shock of the event shook her arrogant and confident demeanor and actually causes her to contemplate her life and cruel reign over the last thousand years:

She thought about how her evil and paranoid personality developed over a thousand years ago that led her to nearly kill Luna and make her the cruel Alicorn today.

She reveals the jealousy of her sister's night being more beloved than the day, and the fears of being overthrown that stems from it, were deep down created from a desperate urge to be loved by her people, by proving herself to be capable and worthy of ruler of their subjects. For this, she had played the part of the High Princess, infallible and perfect in action, zealous in her duties

The seeming perception that no matter how hard she tried to impress and love her subjects, her sister seemed to be loved more by the ponies, resulted in her becoming frustrated, resentful and fearful that she would be cast away for being unworthy of ruler of Equestria, starting the chain of events that leads her to nearly kill her sister and walk down the dark path to become the evil and paranoid tyrant she is now, where her quest to be beloved by her subjects become an obsession for unquestioning loyalty through fear and oppression, where her attempts to be worthy of ruler becoming an obsession for power and to remain in power by any means, at the cause of creating suffering for all her subjects.

She contemplates how being Shining Tyrant had put her in a life of fear, seeing everypony as a potential threat to her reign and had to play vile and ambitious servants under her against one another in elaborate complex schemes just so they won't grow too much in power, making her weary and makes her view everypony in contempt and hatred.

She thought about why she did this, thought about how she often justified every atrocity of her rule, every cruelty and all suffering that forms from it as justified for the good of Equestria. She shows frustration and confusion as to why despite her seemingly good intentions she was unable to win loyalty of her minions and subjects, like Twilight, who she spared because, though she would never admit it, the Unicorn reminded her of Luna with her power

Wondering how her life could had been were she not had not became the Shining Tyrant, she used magic to see the threads of fate, and there, she receives a vision of canon!timeline Equestria, where Princess Celestia took a different route, where she remained a benevolent ruler, well loved by her people by her willingness to be close to them instead working for it above them as she had done, much like how the Shining Tyrant's sister Luna had done.

This would be the climax of the Shining Tyrant's character development - she realized, through her vision, that the life that she wanted, being a ruler that was well-loved by her people, could had been achieved if she had not gave in to her paranoia, resentment and doubt.

She wouldn't had to live in loneliness and fear. She wouldn't had to commit so much terrible deeds to maintain her rule, because she could be LOVED, with her sister and her student at her side, not hurt or driven away as they had, fearing and hating her.

She realizes being the Shining Tyrant of Equestria over the last millennium and all the terrible things she did had cost her everything she once loved and hold dear - her friends, her family, her people, everything. As far as it is concerned, she finally realized what monster she had become, much to her horror.

Her epiphany would be a dramatic high point of the story, driving her into a villainous breakdown, bringing her down into a storm of depression, self-loathing, and self-destructive anger that would drive her to the brink of sanity. At the climax of the saga when the heroes confront her again she would had become a mad tyrant that intends to destroy herself as punishment for her sins and taking all of Equestria with her.

How's that for tragic?

Holy...wow. First of all, I'm impressed and flattered that you would take the time to to contemplate the character of Mourning Star in such depth. Seriously. That is such a huge compliment.

And secondly, I'm really glad you expressed a desire to see this sort of character development with her. I had a scene planned with her and Twilight that was going to bring Mourning Star kind of in this direction but I decided not to include it because I had deemed it somewhat extraneous as we will see where Mourning Star develop later on. Now that you've let me know that you'd like to see something like this I guess I'll be including that scene after all.

As a note she wont be having any visions of canon-verse Equestia but it is an interesting idea. And again, thank you for sharing your thoughts. It's so good to know that someone takes such great interest in what I'm doing with these characters.

You're very welcome. It was nothing, really. I always had thought your version of Celestia was a tragic villain from the get go. I had considered this a logical development in her psyche after considering many possible ways the story could go forth from what you have so far.

Your Shining Tyrant's main motive for nearly killing her sister and becoming tyrant makes sense; she is the elder sister, so she could presumed to be more mature than Luna and less prone to resentment over issues like 'her day being less adored then the night', so she becoming evil out of paranoia and fear makes sense.

But when I think about her, I asked myself, WHY would she suddenly become paranoid of her sister trying to overthrow her, just because she was less adored? Clearly, she must be insecure. Why is she insecure? She is the co-ruler of Equestria with Luna, and as a ruler she must have a very strong sense of self-image, perhaps very high standards for herself, and thus probably prone to doubt and insecurity than canon Celestia. Maybe perhaps she sees the ponies' approval of her as a determinant of whether she was doing a good job? If so, then it makes sense that she would become frustrated at her futile efforts to be loved more than Luna, and fearful that if she was not considered good enough, she would become irrelevant, ready to be cast aside at any moment. Who would take her place then...?

You get the idea. That's how I came up with that prose of character development.

Glad I be able to help you develop the story. Good luck on the rest!

Well now I pretty much have to work on some more Mourning Star.

BrutalityInc In reply to Valkyrie-Girl [2012-05-16 14:11:29 +0000 UTC]

One more thing - I think the only possible reason why Princess Luna and her night was more loved than Princess Celestia in your version of events is because Celestia, in her attempt to prove herself, worked too hard and became too detached from the ponies, and being rifed up in the vile, yet to mature politics of young Equestria, became very distrusting of others, prone to ambition and believing that going back on her own promises and ideals to serve a greater course is justified. She in essence went from benevolent and sociable to an ambitious, secluded Princess.

Princess Luna on the other hoof did opposite of everything Celestia didn't do, and as a result went from a formerly shy and unsociable Princess to become far more admired, ameable and closer to the ponykind, not to mentioned more beloved. This was reflected by the Ponies change of preference from the Day sky to the Night sky.

This could be the point of divergence that leads to the reversal of characters 1000 years back and the events of your story.

It's actually not quite so complicated as ambition or desire for power. It's not even really weather ponies prefer night or day. It boils down to Luna and Celestia themselves. The ponies of Equestria love Luna for who she is and thus love her night because she is responsible for it not because of it's own merits. But even that is not as important as what Celestia forgot; That it's not the love of the ponies of Equestria that fulfill her. Ponies will come and go and their love for her will not last. But Luna will live forever just as Celestia will and so her love will be eternal. Celestia forgot that it is this love is what really matters. She tried to fill that need for love with things that would not satisfy like the love of her subject or, when she failed to gain that, power and an unending reign.

Luna never stopped loving her sister even when she betrayed her, even during her love imprisonment. She always knew what was really important and it's because of that understanding that the ponies love her. The two of them were meant to rule together, neither day or night being loved more than the other. Each has it's purpose, one is not more important than the other. Luna and Celestia were meant to represent this in their relationship as sisters. Once there was unity between them that unity would spread from them into the rest of Equestria.

All Celestia wanted was love, though even she herself may not have understood that, but she tried to find it in the wrong place. This is also pretty much what I imagine happened in the canon version with Nightmare Moon. Luna was searching for something that she already had but failed to see.

Well I hope that all makes sense. I'm not so good with the communicating of the big ideas with the words.
