He is the Alicorn that came before Celestia. Totally canon..ish.

There are two Kings - Helios and Erebus. They're brothers just as Celestia and Luna are sisters.
There was supposed to be a Queen but..well, stuff happened. I'm writing a fanfic about it actually so I can't reveal much.
