Description This is the langskip, the Viking Longboat.
The word drakkar is only a recent creation ( 1830) and comes from the ancient scandinavian drekar (dragons), a wink to the decoration found at the bow of Viking warships.

This one is the Gokstad ship, a burial ship found at the Gokstad farm in Sandar, Norway.
A Viking high born who died on land was sometimes buried in a longship instead of being burnt (some historians even doubt that the burning ship ceremony ever existed). The ship was then buried under a burial mound.

The deceased was dressed in new, daily clothes together with his belongins, food, drink and of course his weapons. His cattle, warhorses and often one of his female servants were also sacrificed and buried with him.

... ......... Magnifique sous cet angle !
Celui-ci est le bateau d'Oseberg, le bateau de Gokstad a des orifices pour les rames sur le troisième bordé et n'a pas les volutes de proue et de poupe comme celui d'Oseberg.

Fantastic that they could rebuild this ship. Those old folks could sure make some amazing things! Thanks for the info on the "drakkar"!

Her size is so big, and the harmony and symmetry of her design so perfect that it is rather humbling to stand besides this ship. Fortunately she was buried in a soil mostly made of clay and was rather well preserved for the most part.

If you ever go to Oslo, this is a must see. It's the only place on earth where you'll see something like this.

She is so big, and her shape so harmonious and elegant that it is really humbling to stand before her.
There are other ships and Viking artifacts in this museum, I'll post them when I'm done sifting my pics.
