I've seen pics of the fox holes with camo netting they have so guard towers should'nt be a surprize.

I wish I could have taken a close-up of the damaged runes, but my camera is not sophisticated enough to allow that.
There's something intriguing: when you look close enough you can see that a chisel and hammer was used to partly remove the symbol. And it makes me wonder...why partly? Why not damaging it beyond any possibility of identification? Why this sloppy job...for the runes are still there to be seen by those knowing what to look for.
Is it carelessness? Or secret sympathy for what it stood for?
Maybe I'm over-analyzing things, but it made me wonder...

Maybe, the person who was ordered to take the symbol off hesitated, feeling either fear or respect in front of this sacred place...

Perhaps the people working on that did not really want to eradicate it completely. I think you may be right.
