Lol, talk about the "Tell me something only you would know" test. Telling those cold truths to get people to believe you. Nice page! Ha ha!

Strange, why would Gallen not believe them the first time? If that biteleaf is this worlds equivalent of the stuff in my g- I mean erm...weed...then this should be kinda beliveable to man that is high

Oh he is definitely high, but he is also definitely a skeptical bastard.

Yeah; it's like a single long, detailed TF sequence, in which the focus is all the stuff that happens as a result of the TF!

Money is on that Galen will wake up tomorrow and think it was some weird trip he had XD And Gosh darn it Kass the place is run down enough! Stop making holes in the floor

Valsalia In reply to MixedScales [2014-12-16 18:02:02 +0000 UTC]

Ha! If I weren't in such a rush to finish the prologue, I'd actually planned on including a few panels somewhere showing exactly that; Galen waking up the next day and wondering just how much of what he remembers actually happened.

With great difficulty! Like a child whose father thought it would be a good character-building exercise to strap his/her legs onto a pair of stilts. Forever. With little bird feet on the ends.

This has absolutely nothing to do with this page, but I was just wondering about Yannis.  Is there any substitute for hive pheromones?  Will loads of excess B.O. do?  I'm still caught up on buggy madness, I want to see how they cure it and, admittedly, some face-eating.

Valsalia In reply to ShadowDevill [2014-05-20 03:16:30 +0000 UTC]

Hey now, what makes you sure they will 'cure' it? I could be pulling a George R. R. Martin and killing off a character every hundred pages!

I can see Kass falling into a wealth of irony through all this.  As a human he labored in the pursuit of authority and dignity, but as a Yinglet female she might automatically be elevated to a position of prominence within their society.  Sort of a skewed "serve in Heaven or reign in Hell" scenario, at least from his/her perspective.  I'm sure her fellow Yinglets would disagree.  ...Or maybe not.  They might envy humans very much.

Though I'd expect that in any case Kass wouldn't find much temptation in being a Yinglet princess.  Not only will she most likely remain desperate to regain her humanity (and gender), up to this point she's demonstrated a strong work ethic.  She clearly believes that status should be earned, not given.

Then again, it's not like she hasn't already suffered to get to where she is... if there's no cure forthcoming, she might just try to make the best of things.  But there'll probably be some quest or other that needs to be examined before she admits to that possibility.

Xeno426 In reply to JoeEngland [2014-10-21 05:07:12 +0000 UTC]

From what's been posted so far, part of being a Yinglet "princess" would involve providing young, something that I'm sure is seen as a very important duty due to the male/female ratio of the species. Being a female that refuses to engage in that behavior will likely ostracize Kass from that culture. and being a scav would also ostracize Kass from humans (an out-of-placer indeed).

On a much darker note, should Kess remain outside both societies (and their protection), I can easily see desperate male Yinglets forming what could coldly be described as a "rape gang" to take advantage of an exposed and undefended female. That's probably not a route you want to go down unless you are really desperate to completely change the tone of your story.

Hmm, I wonder if that front tooth grows throughout a Yinglet's life, rather like the incisors on rodents. Since it lacks a partner tooth on the bottom jaw, the only way to keep it sharp would be through constant gnawing. If the tooth doesn't grow out continually, Yinglets would find themselves in a situation reminiscent of the Weddell seal; if that big tooth on the Yinglet is important for survival, the rate of wear would form a natural barrier for maximum life expectancy.

Also, I just realized that I've been incorrectly spelling "Kass" as "Kess". Huh.

Holy crap, that's some comprehensive, juicy analysis right there! And much of it's spot-on; makes me want to skip right to Kass' introduction to Yinglet society. I can say without spoiling anything that Yinglets are divided about the cultural issue; some want to emulate human culture, some want to establish their own, and most of them don't think about it because there's too much scavenging/eating/sleeping/scrapping/thieving to worry about.

This is actually the first time I've had a glimpse into someone else's thoughts and expectations about the storyline, so I'm excited that so much of what I intended is coming through! Thanks for taking the time to write that; now I'm all full of inspiration and need to draw a lot.

Even if they don't get along well, the Dinnish refugees generally stick together. Imagine if the USA got bombed to oblivion and there were only a few people around who you could talk to about home and your native culture. Even if they're jerks, you need SOMEone to talk with about the life you all used to have.

And in this pre-telecommunications world, nobody outside your countrymen really know much about your country aside from "I hear they're got good iron!"

i agree one shouldn't live alone, especially in an apocalyptic world. i dont know why but i feel so happy when i see things like this come together. every one who is different or odd come together for the same goal. i dont know, i just find it amazing really i do.

speaking of which, you wouldn't happen to know the meaning of the word (misfit) would you?

Valsalia In reply to Neulibrium5 [2014-05-18 22:49:42 +0000 UTC]

Well damn, I'm glad the story's hit a spot of interest then! And yeah, misfits definitely describe most of the main characters in the Out-Of-Placers. I went with that name because of the pun it makes in acronym form.

Oh, he's got a lot more general life experience than a yinglet, but on the other hand, he now has a yinglet's brain, which has its own special little way of working.

More on that soon enough!

He's going to try to find the scan merchant who sold that to him, isn't he? …she?  And when Kass does, he's going to be kidnapped by a bunch of hormonal he-scavs, isn't he.  Please tell me that Kass is smart enough not to go outside.

…actually, that would be hilarious.  Please tell me he isn't smart enough!

Hey, gotta say something, right? And it's certainly better than "Oh god my life is over just kill me nowwwww"

Having already lost his country and everything that comes with it, he and Elim are pretty resilient and skilled in the art of not letting things get to them.

This is a slightly new sort of experience, however.

Well fear not; you can potentially gain this skill! All you have to do is lose everything important to you a few times and your heart will surely shrivel into an indestructible black husk. A coping mechanism as old as humanity itself, it is!
