Description A portrait of Benisato, the diabolical killer that controlls snakes in Ninja Scroll movie. I did this for the latest studio ikari tribute.

After first drafts in gray tones a little awfull, at last take the way to the idea I had in mind and especially the tone of muted colors and cool their skin in contrast to the tattoo (which kept me working on the tablet for a long time). All topped with that snake emerging from his skin like crying freeman movie ... I guess subconsciously actually the covers of this series are the ones I have played a role in giving birth this picture ... that, and some of that fetishism made in sorayama that attracts me so much.

I really like the end result, especially the tattoo ... makes me think a lot an old hard rock cover of 80's XD.

I have a question for you. I've been looking through your blog, using babblefish to interpret some of your posts. It does an okay job at best, hahaha. I speak a little spanish so that helps, but I haven't really found anything that explores how you go from your black and white grey scale rendering to the colored version. Are you color mapping it in photoshop, selecting areas and colorizing them? That seems to be my best guess, then going over the colorized image with some additional color rendering/painting.

I ask this because I've traditionally been a guy who just goes right into color but I'm currently working on an illustration where I'm doing the whole thing in greyscale first. My initial thoughts are to approach the poster the way I would using traditional methods, much like Drew Struzan works. He does his initial drawing with some greyscale then airbrushes basic colors over the drawing then going in with color and tightening the whole thing up. I used to this method but it can take a long time, so I'm curious to try some of these methods I mentioned above. J.Scott Campbell just posted an image where he used color mapping to colorize a greyscale image and it looked great. I think your results are fantastic (your work can almost fool me into thinking it's done in a traditional, non-digital technique) and would appreciate even the shortest of explanations of your process there.

And I'm writing this here instead of in a private note because I'm sure there's lots of other artists (and fans of your work) that would be interested in knowing a little about this. Thanks and best wishes.

Hi,
Yeah someday I have to do a more in deep tutorial . To give the color to the B/W base I do a process really similar to the one of struzan but oviously in digital way.
The first steep it's take a brush in overlay mode with a really low saturation, then paint directly in the same layer where the b/w base is ( block it to take the good effect). I paint in this way because it respects all the shades of the gray base and allows me to add more nuances. After this I usually play a little with the brightness/contrast and some selective correction to adjust the colors exactly in the way I want. Then I start to add more details on all the illustration, and add textures.
If it's a speed paint or a simply sketch, I usually do everything on one layer, ( maybe less some textures). If has to be an illustration for some book or a really complex one I work with the selective correction or the bright/contrast in some layers too.
I hope that this explanation have been helpful

Yes, very. Thanks a lot. I usually don't color on my grey layer, but I will try that this time (after I copy the layer of course); it makes a lot of sense. It's like Struzan airbrushing over his initial drawing. I often lock the transparency on my grey layer (or ink layer in comics) and color on it that way. It will be interesting to see if the way you're talking about yields similar results. I like to work in as few layers as possible but I always end up with a lot because I want changes to be easy if the client asks for them. Thanks again for the response. It's always fun to learn about other people's processes. Keep up the great work!
