Description i realized i haven't drawn a dragon in years....and years....at least not that i can recall...

so, dammit, here's a dragon! lifted from sketchbook and buttered up on the computer so as not to be looking like just a crummy sketch.

yaaah!

Wow! I love this piture
I looks so awesome! I've seen some other dragon pictures by other people and they look so smooth and flawless and, well, boring
But your dragon has little imperfections like bumps on the skin, chips in the horns etc. Those things make it look more real, becuse in reality nothing is perfect. It that made any sense at all ...
Anyways, + and

thanks!

yes indeed, scars and imperfections speak volumes about a character! even if that character is a dragon...maybe, especially if it's a dragon.....

you'll draw his body?
I think....he has a big body, and is quadruped!

And I like the effect like burning the paper ~.

Excellent line art and cool old paper effect! I like the design cause it isn't the typical long muzzle one (like chinese dragons).

VanHeist In reply to JadeGL [2006-02-27 15:20:29 +0000 UTC]

thank you! although the long muzzle is cool, the snubbed muzzle just screams power in dragons, especially the crown of heavy horns.

glad you like!

thanks (i had a hunch LightningRyu had a thing for the dragons )

got some scripts recently that call for more dragon/dragonkin type creatures, so there'll likely be more

lol You're very welcome (woah, I feel formal) -- oh, question: Do you think manga/anime is a passing fad?? I'm getting feedback (from that older generation..uwaurgh) with things like,"It's not going to last" or "It's not a reliable field of work" --- ooookay?? BUT I LIKE IT!!! (obsessed with it, actually) Anyway, someone else's thoughts might make a difference ... I hope, I hope!

ooh fascinating question!
it definitely has the earmarks of a passing fad, especially given that comic/graphic novel culture in America tends to fluctuate on a 10-year scale....it's easy to observe that trend and apply the same principle to manga/anime. But the influence and acceptability of manga in Western culture has always been an upward trend, albeit a slow slow SLOW one.
Older people who naysay about it either 1) don't understand the slight cultural differences between East and West culture 2) Are ignorant about anime/manga's roots in American cartoonism (really!) 3) Are classic "American" comic culture fans who would rather read revisionist X-Men stories again and again and again rather than engage a new and self-contained story. (A little of my own bias in there )

But with all things, it's only a fad if it's eaten up but never sustained. As artists we can consume and produce these things. It's when we drink deep from the well but never plant a garden that a fad passes into oblivion. The surest way to prevent this is to study the manga culture, promote it, and challenge ourselves to reinvent it. Us Westerners are just beginning to wade into the sea of manga and anime and it'd be a shame to see it die off.

I'm a wordy wordy bastard, but that was a fun topic! Thanks!

When I look at that face, I think of Jurassic Park, because he (gender assumption) looks like a T-rex to me, aside from those spikes and that....flap...thing.

It's really neat looking though, and I lurveh the "old paper" effect

VanHeist In reply to Doomfool [2006-02-27 15:26:32 +0000 UTC]

*laughs* god, Jurassic Park...the first one, anyway....just DOMINATED my life in grade school....i must have drawn that T-Rex a million times, a lot based off of Mark "Crash" McCreery (think i spelled his name right) and his concept art for the movie. So most any reptilian/dragonkin stuff I draw is likely to share those aspects...

glad you think it looks neat! the old paper was kind of an afterthought, but it does add something....

references were all mental, although that doesn't mean no inspiration i used to draw dinosaurs and dragons endlessly....ENDLESSLY in grade school, so it's more or less an update since i like to think i draw a little better nowadays

Awsome! You do dragons very very well. I luv all the detail you put into the spikes and the facial structure. The eye really stands out. It gives the face intellegence when the rest of it seems to move towards a brute-ish appearance.
