1. The lady in the library told Malcolm he spends too much time with his nose in a textbook. She thought he should do something creative and fun, before he grows up and can no longer find the time to do creative and fun things; she suggested he write a poem. Malcolm had never written a poem before and was unsure how to go about it, but he did his best and read it aloud in an unsteady voice.
"Stars and plants,
Beebs and ants;
We see them all the time
But who are we
To think we see
What's there, and not a lie?The rhyming wasn't perfect, but the lady in the library told Malcolm it sounded very nice.

2. Malcolm found a book on astronomy and was instantly fascinated. He bought a broken telescope for a couple coins he'd earned, and set about fixing it so he could study the stars.
