It works for the bones (and obviously not for the feathers ahah), but yes, the anatomy is the same

So what would a fairly realistic depiction of a harpy look like.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

VanyCat In reply to arcane37 [2016-10-05 20:31:43 +0000 UTC]

Boop upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia… Ahahah
But really, it depends a lot from what myth you want to refer ^^ I prefer the version with feathered arms and chicken legs xD

arcane37 In reply to VanyCat [2016-10-05 20:34:29 +0000 UTC]

Would the harpy design from monster musume work. I essentially want to design a harpy that cute/sexy but feasible and somewhat realistic.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

VanyCat In reply to arcane37 [2016-10-05 20:43:04 +0000 UTC]

I don't know monster musume but I've looked it up on google xD
The legs can work like that, but if you want something more realistic you should totally replace the arms with complete and big wings (and the feathers should extend until the flank, proportionally), and also the tail to manage directional changes during the flight.
Another realism note might be the keel in the chest but I don't know if that would look cute or sexy xD

What's a keel also here's a pick of the harpy subspecies I was trying to go off of.

VanyCat In reply to arcane37 [2016-10-05 21:21:00 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I saw that on google, but I don't know anything about this manga so I can't give you advice about it.
If you want to make a realistic like harpy just look up to birds that might function the same way as the character that you want to made. Choose if it's a predator bird, a prey bird or a non-flying bird and study what characterize them the most and what fit your harpy the best ^^
Also, the keel is a characteristic bird's bone www.paulnoll.com/Oregon/Birds/…

Keel? I should probably mention that I've written up more then one type of harpy but they essentially come in two categories flyers and runners.

Vanycat for a pegasus do the wings connect to the shoulder muscle or at the point where the front legs connect to the skeleton in the back (SFM model) also using a seagull wing what would the correct sq ft to body ratio be

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

VanyCat In reply to derpydad [2015-11-17 00:20:13 +0000 UTC]

Hello
The correct position where wings connect to the body, in my opinion, it's right over the shoulder place, as I've shown in the tutorial over the feline body.
The interior parts (muscle and skeleton) can be modeled as you think best, but from the outside the wings should pop up from there.
Also, if you really want to make an anatomically correct pegasus, it should also have the wishbone, coracoid and keel like birds have.
I don't have any idea of what's a SFM model is, sorry xD

Seagull's wing span is approximately the double of his body, so, minimum, the wings should be the double of the horse length.
But a horse shape it's more bulk than a seagull so the wings should probably be even more longer to support his weight (even if his weight would be lighter due to hollow bones)

Hope my answer is sufficient and understandable

Nice! I recently got two bird-like characters and I hardly ever draw birds so this wing tutorial can really be usefull!

Leafcrowns [2015-10-28 01:38:10 +0000 UTC]

I think it's really great, except for the placement on the shoulder- there would need to be more bones and a keel placement, plus there would be too much muscle for the arm to move properly

other than that, your wings are lovely

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

VanyCat In reply to Leafcrowns [2015-10-28 15:06:55 +0000 UTC]

Yes you're right ^^
The tutorial was just to define the position of the wings, not all the anatomy inside. Otherwise I should have mentioned also that winged hybrid should have hollow bones to fly and the tail feather to balance and to give direction ^^
A more accurate and specific work in that direction would have required a whole new tutorial and on Da there are already some of them that I already found really complete and accurate
I wanted to do a "simple" tutorial so that anyone can understand the basic of wings, anyway thanks a lot for your comment and I'm really glad that you appreciate my work
