I'm submitting this now because I've been itching to submit it for a couple of weeks now, I was trying to get everything in order with this. Oorieu is a deep sea dragon.

Anatomy description
For Oorieu to swim comfortably, I designed certain things about him to adapt to water. One: I greatly reduced the length of the humerus compared to a wyvern, because Oorieu’s arms stay at his sides most or all the time. It allows him to swim a lot easier without having to bring his entire arms forward to propel himself through the water, mainly because it is difficult to do, it would slow you down, and tire the arm muscles a lot faster. Two: I gave him small legs because he spends most or all of his time in the water, but he can use his wrists to walk on, on land. Three: To make catching prey at his deepest range of depth interesting/possible, 3500 ft, I gave Oorieu a lure that has a thin band of muscle that allows him to have control over it, not letting the water current move it while he is hunting. The muscle is attached right underneath the bottom jaw. Four: I put skin over his horns to protect them from the icy waters of the deep. Five: I gave him a overall coverage of fat to keep him relatively warm in the water. I added thicker bands of fat for insulation and padding, such the fat on the back and the wrists, respectively.

www.seasky.org/deep-sea/deep-s… is an awesome website that easily informed me of the creatures of the deep. From there, I was able to see what animals live at what depth, learning how to base my design on this info. In the ID flash animation, I took/learned from that: I wanted to not focus on the deepest of creatures, but somewhere on the top of the deep, in between the twilight and midnight zones of the deep; I wanted to base my design on something shark-like, something with form and mass to it, such as the oarfish, sixgill shark, whale, and coelacanth. Based on the average depths that these creatures live in, I wanted Oorieu to be able to go down to about 3500 feet, an area where some bioluminescence can be used for hunting.
www.seasky.org/deep-sea/oarfis… An Oarfish is the fish I that to be the most inspiring for Oorieu’s coloring and theme. After some other research, I found that most deep sea creatures are red or black, so I made Oorieu colors similar.
www.livescience.com/1078-seals… I looked up this website because I wanted to base Oorieu on a seal/shark, not angular fish that are very small. For Oorieus anatomy, I based in on seals, animals that can dive to the deep sea, the same range of depth as Oorieu. I also learned many physical adaptions seal do for diving in the deep.

Here is a list of a seal’s ability to dive in the deep sea.
A. Hold and maintain low oxygen levels during a dive
1. Turn off shivering
2. Allow entire body to chill down in water, close to hypothermia
3. Allow the brain’s temp to drop by 5 degrees to prevent hypoxia
B. Fat

Wow this is an amazing piece! I've never worked with this medium before but I would love to try one day ^-^ I have always loved dragons The color scale that you chose for this piece is great too; makes the dragon seem more dangerous.

KARA! I'm jealous. As always. And you know that's a compliment. Haha. Amazing work! Is this an update on a previous work? Or is this completely new? >>the background might be throwing me off because I know you use similar backgrounds at times.) haha. Beautiful though.

Thanks. I did it at the beginning of last year. Idk about the background, its meant to appear like it was close to the surface, so the light is shining through the water, making it more intense.

Oh, I get what's going on in the background. I was just saying it looks like you've used similar backgrounds, BUT that makes sense BC you draw a lot of sea creatures. Lol

His inspiration actually was based on an oarfish - coloring and inspiration for entire theme, a goblin shark and a six gill shark - in general face and body design, and angler fish - awesome teeth. Thanks :3

Sorry for not getting to this sooner. The dragon is fine in most respects but you have a bit of work on the background. I am going to give you a short list of what could be improved for future reference. I am going to start with the dragon itself.

1. Your affirmatives: You certainly have your bioluminescence (or I think his wings are bioluminescent) and he looks well armored for fighting.
2. One thing I get with many of the other entries is that pressure would probably crush your creature.
3. Another common problem is that your sea is too bright. It should be pitch black or almost pitch black.

You have no more or less problems than most of the other entries. The piece itself is very well done and good for casual viewing. However, it does have a few flaws for this contest.

Why are you critiquing everyone that entered the contest?

ArchiosLukos In reply to LynnTV [2011-10-04 22:15:29 +0000 UTC]

I can stop if everyone is opposed to it. I was just trying to point out flaws that I saw right off the bat. Like I said, tell me if I'm wrong...

LynnTV In reply to ArchiosLukos [2011-10-04 23:44:59 +0000 UTC]

No, no... :[

Criticism is always good. Sometimes, people can take criticism to heart though, because they put a lot of effort into a particular art work. It was just something I noticed with this contest. I don't know if that's how you always comment, but I just had to ask why you were commenting that way? I hope that didn't upset you!

I think some of the things you said though may have hurt Vara's feelings like, "causal viewing." I think she put a lot of effort into her image and to have that label placed wasn't fair to her.

If you didn't read my description, that would explain a lot of decisions I made with Oorieu.

I believe I did enough research for this dragon. I looked up and studied the anatomy and biology of a seal, an animal that can dive to the deep, example, 5000 feet for the elephant seal. That is in the Abyssopelagic Zone. My dragon however, is designed to live in between the Mesopelagic Zone and Bathypelagic Zone, areas of the deep that are fairly survivable for creatures of similar body mass. For more info about how seals survive the deep, here ya go [link]

From [link]
"Mesopelagic Zone - Below the epipelagic zone is the mesopelagic zone, extending from 200 meters (656 feet) to 1000 meters (3281 feet). The mesopelagic zone is sometimes referred to as the twilight zone or the midwater zone. The light that penetrates to this depth is extremely faint. It is in this zone that we begin to see the twinkling lights of bioluminescent creatures. A great diversity of strange and bizarre fishes can be found here.

Bathypelagic Zone - The next layer is called the bathypelagic zone. It is sometimes referred to as the midnight zone or the dark zone. This zone extends from 1000 meters (3281 feet) down to 4000 meters (13,124 feet). Here the only visible light is that produced by the creatures themselves. The water pressure at this depth is immense, reaching 5,850 pounds per square inch. In spite of the pressure, a surprisingly large number of creatures can be found here. Sperm whales can dive down to this level in search of food. Most of the animals that live at these depths are black or red in color due to the lack of light."

I based Oorieu on this information and designed him to have similar attributes as the sperm whale, sharks, two creatures that can have substantial mass to them. Another thing I decided for Oorieu is that he can walk, sleep, hunt, whatnot on land, so in this image, he is close to the surface and the rays of light are shining through his wings, creating a red glow. And his wings are not bioluminescent, it is just the lure on his neck. I chose not to design a deep sea dragon similar to viperfish, fangtooth, and anglerfish because they live WAY too deep and they are very small.

I did not ask to have this critiqued.

Sorry if it felt like I was dumping on you. I am only stating my glance-at opinion. However, you did not ask to be critiqued and I did not ask to be lectured in return. I hope you will please forgive me if I seemed careless or thoughtless. I am sorry to have inconvenienced you. Good Luck in the contest.

Sincerely,
Lukos

These are only facts that I stated in my description and would have made your initial first viewing of this image more clear. Its better to be in the know then to not understand.

Good luck in the contest.
