i've noticed that shields of the coats of arms of Czechoslovakia and Hungary that were official in the period of, roughly, 1960-1990, were very distinctive: the Czechoslovak one was a Hussite shield and the Hungarian one was based on the so called "Kossuth arms" from the Springtime of the Peoples era.

Polish coa has a more typical shield, but the very fact that it is a traditional heraldic shield stands out of the emblems of most other Socialist countries, that were intentionally at odds with the traditional heraldry.

the emblem of the Soviet Union has a globe instead of a shield, GDR has a red circle and Bulgaria a blue oval. emblems of socialist Romania had no backgrounds at all, but their overall shapes were ovoid.
