This is beautiful! I love claddaghs, and i especially like the way you kept this one simple without making it look dull. The way the knotwork moves into the hands is just lovely!

Your work is wonderfully detailed and designed; I dig that the JMG icon you submitted emphasizing metalwork too ... metalwork doesn't get enough attention here on DA!

Yeah. But my celtic rings are not really metal work. It's wax carving, and then casting.

You do not have the same quality with a casted ring and a forged ring.

we do our best with what we have though! I like your work, and I'm intrigued now by the technique as I am unfamiliar with wax casting.

It's very simple : you do all the carving on the wax. Not candle wax. it's a special wax for carving. Then you give it to a foundry and they cast it into silver.

You can also make the cast, but having a good casting is very difficult, especially with silver.

And casted metal is not solid as forged. That's why I'm now working on the metal, to show you jewels of a better quelity...

how much does the foundry charge? And how do you do the cast yourself?

The foundry is about 6/10€ for a cast, and the price of the metal. It's not very expensive with silver, and it doesn't worth to make your own foundry, and have all the troubles of a self-made cast.

There are many ways to cast "by yourself". Of course, you can buy all the big machines, but, well...

It's a bit complicated and I'm not good enough in english, but wiki explains it very well here : [link]

You can also use a cuttlefish's bone to make your mold.

Sorry for my slow reply, was saving this for reference in my messages. but, I can just save the wiki page heheh.

I've been amazed to find out since joining DA how many affordable means to working with metal there really are short of building a forge and making lots of tools ... so many exciting possibilities to explore. Thank you for sharing.

I love this claddagh! I love how you kept some of the edges just slightly rough and stylized, so that it looks ancient yet modern at the same time. Brilliant. Most people make claddagh too cutesy for my taste. Even though I'm a graphic designer, I don't think overly graphic representations of the claddagh imagery is appropriate. It's such an old, romantic Irish custom, it should be treated as sacred. This is a beautiful version of the tradition. Nice job.
