Gorgons were three, and they were sisters - Medusa, Euryale and Stheno, and they were beautiful, and the last two were also immortal.Poseidon once seduced Medusa (or she did) in the temple of Athena. Goddes for some reason get angry not with her uncle but with Medusa and turned her into a monster with scary eyes and snakes instead of hair. When somebody looks at her face he will turn into stone. In a literal sense.

It is my understanding that there is debate over whether the Greek gods engagements with women were intended to indicate seduction or rape. I think this is similar to how the earliest myths almost certainly included human sacrifice, but 1000 years later when the last myths were being written it had all been changed and replaced with miracles, coincidences, etc. IMHO, a similar "retrograde continuity" could have occurred with the way women were treated sexually. The earliest myths are certainly not very...tactful.
I think Athena was quite angry with Poseidon. And she knew the way to hurt Poseidon the most was to hurt the woman he cared about the most (at the time). This shows Athena had a shocking lack of respect for her priestess, but it's completely in character. Athena didn't respect anybody except her father.
Meanwhile, Medusa turned life's lemons into lemonade by becoming an artist specializing in statues.

Beautiful rendering of Medusa. She's usually portrayed as ugly. In you rendition, I know why she turns men into 'stone,' literally perhaps, certainly figuratively.

Not to drop a serious note on this site but if you read the actual Medusa myth the REAL story was Medusa (still human) was so beautiful that Poseidon tried to "woo" her but she said no. After a while of this, Poseidon got fed up and RAPED the poor girl... on the steps outside Athena's temple. Yeah, messed up, right? Not even close; when Medusa pleaded to Athena for help, Athena was (beyond) jealous that Poseidon would 'lower' himself just for this, mortal. So, she cursed Medusa.
And there you have it children; Poseidon was a rapist, Athena was a cankerous bitch, and you thought poor Medusa was the monster in this myth?!?

I don't think I've ever seen Medusa rendered with so much red, I love it! normally people tend to stick with green, but the red is so much better.
