There's no "Colgate", "Romana" or "Minty Fresh". They're all Minuette, except for the last one who is just a glittering version of Twilight Sparkle. And when it comes to large crowds of characters, multiple copies of the same character is a common goof in most cartoon shows.

Unfortunately, this is a misfortune that was inevitable from the start. Much like modern manga artwork, the vast majority of ponies share the exact same base. Speed Racer, Gigantor, Kimba. These did not have this problem. Old ponies didn't, either, because we only focused on a small group of them. There was never a big crowd of them like there is with FiM. Use dozens or hundreds, and you will see repeats. Use less than a dozen regulars, you have individuality. Firefly, Surprise, WW, Fizz, Gust, Buttons, Bright Eyes, Baby Lickety Split.

Canon Derpy has bad enough problems - there seems to be THREE names (Derpy Hooves, Ditzy Doo, Muffins) for her now, and no good way of telling which one is SUPPOSED to be correct one!

Well, there's a trouble with Ditzy Doo, a continuity failure:
The ponies that were sent to search for the birds mentioned Ditzy Doo got lost and went north to find the south birds. BUT Derpy is not in the group when Dash sends them to get the birds. Instead, she's seen with Rainbow's group, bucking clouds. There's another pony who is a repaint of Derpy and even has the same cutie mark (but her hair is like reddish) who is seen later returning with a flock of birds.
Thus, by logic, Derpy/Muffins is not the same pony as Ditzy Doo.

You're a princess. Just decree that all ponies who look like Minuette must answer to her name and pretend to be her when addressed. Any who demonstrate a lack of proficiency with her personality or a lack of knowledge of her life shall be sent to the dungeons.
