Before Celestia and Luna took over Equestria in place of their parents, their father told them that when the time came, they needed to create an heir to the throne. However, being alicorns and gods, he forbade them to hold an heir with any mortal and to have one between the two of them. This made Celestia and Luna uneasy at the idea, but they wouldn't think to go against their father. No mortal was good enough to create the two of them, in such he created his own mate to bear his children.

The two princesses forgot about this for many, many years until they got older, their bodies starting to change as their godhood strengthened. Celestia soon brought up what their father had told them, deciding that it was time for an heir. Luna was uncomfortable with the idea, seeing as their citizens were against such things, even if they were deities. Celestia waved away Luna's worries, not really paying mind to them or what she thought. It was also decided Luna would bare the child.

However, when the child was born, Celestia saw what it looked like and feared what they could have created. Thinking it some bad omen, Celestia ordered Luna to be rid of the deformed thing. Luna fought back and argued, but Celestia would have none of it. Seeing no other option, Luna turned to a long time friend and secret lover: a vampire named Philter.

Horrified by the actions of Celestia, Philter didn't hesitate to take in Golden as his own. Luna came to visit in times when she could, when Celestia didn't question her whereabouts. They raised the kid in secret and turned out to be a wonderful son, though a bit distant. His magic was unruly and hard to control, which Philter tried his best to console and teach him to almost no progress.

It was some years before things changed in his personality. Luna would start coming to Philter, crying about how Celestia and their subjects held no care or regards for her and her beautiful night. This repeated itself for some time before the moon eclipsed the sun one day and a mare's head reflected in the craters of the moon. Luna failed to show up after that and Philter took the news hard. Luna's banishment was hard on them and made worse when a shooting star landed on the front steps of the castle, the gargoyles bringing in a baby. Luna had been banished while she was pregnant with Philter's child and used the last of her magic to send him the child when he was born. All the prior events had planted a seed of hatred in Golden for Celestia, and the events of Nightmare Moon only made it flare and grow into an inferno.

Over the next thousand years, Golden grew better with his magic and watched as their small family grew bigger. Philter going to Celestia for answers, and a one night stand or two later, having a child with Celestia only to keep her away from Philter and hiding her true looks under a disguise before running away one day to the castle. Another being abandoned by Celestia's niece after meeting Philter on a night out. And finally, thanks to the help of a few ponies, Luna was freed from her imprisonment and brought back to them.
