Description A partial revamp of the old piece here: gorgaidon.deviantart.com/art/H…
I won't be updating this one anymore - if I plan on doing another Disney piece later on then I might make an addition to here, but otherwise I'd prefer to do individual pieces instead cause this one takes too long!

From left to right, top to bottom:

Aladdin - I tried looking for concept art for Agrabah but I could find nothing decent on Google which sucked...so I kinda had to improvise and as a result i'm not pleased with the background. As for the character himself, I sort of used Arjun Rampal as a reference www.google.com.au/search?q=nie…

Ariel - the idea was to make her look alluring and mysterious like mermaids are SUPPOSED TO BE In the original drawing I even got rid of her purple bra which I've always found to be tacky.

Aurora - for Sleeping Beauty, I think I was going for a doll-like look for Aurora which accounts for her golden curls and small mouth. I also wanted to make her look peaceful in her sleep...almost dead-like in a beautiful way which sounds a bit creepy. Also, I wanted to make her dress softer looking compared to the jaggedness of the dress in the animated film.

Beast/Adam - I still can't believe that the Beast's name is Adam...it doesn't sound right in my ears for some reason. Maybe because I was expecting a more gothic sounding name for Beast. Anyway, the point of his piece is to show the dual sides of his character - the Beast who despairs at his fate, and the prince who is meant to look snobbish like he was at the beginning... I used a photo of Stuart Townsend from Queen of the Damned as a reference here www.thevampirelestat.net/cast/…

Belle - I had a gothic romantic idea for this one, and the final result is pretty much how I pictured it (save for the ridiculously messy background...still practising as you can see) . The idea was always to have Beast in human form in the shadows, but in beast form in the light. I am also pleased with how Belle looks - she is one of my favourite Disney characters after all

Prince Caspian X and Aslan - Yup, I wanted to add Chronicles of Narnia characters in too just to add some variety. I'm quite pleased with how Aslan turned out since I normally don't draw animals. Anyway, I simply used the Prince Caspian poster as a reference, and pictured the beach near Cair Paravel at the beginning of the movie as a background reference for this one. Funny that this is the only background I'm content with so far

Cinderella - I did this one in July and watched the animated film again. The cool thing about Disney films is that the animations fit the era - Cinderella was released in 1950 and the way the animators created the main character made her look like a 50s actress. So I used Grace Kelly as a reference for Cinderella since she kind of has the facial features that the character has. Not entirely happy with the pose though - could've been better

Esmeralda - I wasn't sure what to do with Esmeralda's design, but I also wanted to take advantage of this project to practice backgrounds...as we can see 'practice' is the keyword here cause I think it looks kinda horrible. It was based on the Hunchback of Notre Dame concept artwork for Paris.

Giselle - I wanted to work with the animated Giselle rather than Amy Adams as a model this time. As far as I can see from watching Enchanted, Giselle sort of reminds me of Rapunzel but with her head higher in the clouds really. I wanted to make her look carefree and somewhat childish like her character is at the beginning of the movie.

Li Shang - I wasn't sure how I pictured Li Shang, so I used Nie Yuan as a reference www.google.com.au/search?q=nie…

Mulan - The aim with Mulan was to be more unconventional - by that I mean, don't make her sweet and pretty like Disney princesses are usually portrayed as...make her the fierce warrior she would be on the battlefield. I imagine that if she was such a brave soldier as the original Chinese ballad describes, she would have to be as fierce as the men on the battlefield to survive.

Pocahontas - Just did something simple for this one - I couldn't really think of a good idea for Pocahontas, but I did want to play around by putting on the chieftain's headdress on her I know it's probably culturally inaccurate..but it does make a good design, and technically she's a princess - the chieftain's daughter yeah?

Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, Elizabeth Swann and Barbossa - Knocking out four with one stone here. I used the Curse of the Black Pearl poster as a reference. Not too happy about the paint job - I preferred it in B&W but leaving it that way for this piece didn't work well.

Tinkerbell - Little to say about this one but I wanted to keep it simple. I also decided to change her hair and give her a short pixie haircut

mad props. i like the Beast/Prince frame and the Pocahontas frame most. (the headdress looks cool)  The only thing, and it's a pet peeve of mine, is that Cinderella's dress is white/silver in the 1950 film, contrary to what her appearance has been changed to in recent years

Thank you! Indeed her dress is more silver in colour - I made it blue though cause the blue shows the lighting better. Silver is a bit harder to make the lighting stand out

about the name 'Adam', is it really, I hear a lot of people that he actually had no name in the movie, but I was thinking, were did that name then came from?...

I think one of the Disney-related merchandises gave him the name Adam [link] I also wondered for a while why everyone called him Prince Adam when he had no name in the film

This is truly wonderful!! I always like to see how those character WIPs turn out, it's so interesting From some characters I couldn't really make up who they actually presented, therefore I just read your description. Heheh, I'm not too well familiar with all the Disney figurines... gheh, my bad I kinda like how you changed Mulan so much, I was totally like, 'who's that?' I can't remember a vampire-like creature in Disney...? OHHH it's -Mulan-! err sorry T_T Overall, I really like the way you put the shades on your pictures, especially on this one. It looks so smooth Nice job~

I don't know why but I thought it was Ingrid Bergman not Grace Kelly you used as a reference from first look. They were similar in looks though so its an easy mistake! Love it! And I love Mary Blaire's concept art/environments from Cinderella. She's one of my idols! One of the most recognized female animators/concept artists of the time It was a male dominated work place then

Love the tinkerbell one but I just have to say one thing I'd change is the shadow on the right side of her face. Its where the light source should be hitting the hardest so just ease up those shadows on that side of her nose. Other than that, wonderful! Love the pattern on her wings!

This is great! No offense, but I was wondering who the last two were for a moment because, to me, they don't look asian...oh well.

If you're still adding on to this, might I suggest Taran from "The Black Cauldron?" There's not enough good fanart of that guy, and there are some pretty good pictures of him from the movie if you google it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

VD-Art In reply to Swordfry [2012-04-23 12:25:50 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Haha, no worries, I don't take offense from that I've had some people tell me the same thing - it's a little difficult getting the Asian look right. I get the feeling their eyes need to be more tilted to fit the racial features more accurately.

I am thinking of adding characters from The Black Cauldron. To be honest, I think that's one of the Disney movies I've never seen before, so it'll give me the opportunity to actually watch something new. I plan on doing the same thing with Tron which I also have never seen
