Description I received the LOTR trilogy book set for Xmas and have been catching up on Middle Earth again! LOTR is one of the major inspirations in my life and has sparked my interest in fantasy art...I just got done with the Fellowship and wanted to depict the confrontation between Gandalf and the Balrog at the bridge of Khazad-Dum. Trying to go for a dynamic illustration...let me know that you guys think!

You made the Balrog look even more demon-like than the movie, but I like the design and I think Gandalf looks much more heroic fighting a smaller one instead of one who stood twenty meters high.

LotR is awesome. It has to be the best trilogy I've ever read. This is an awesome rendition of the scene at the Bridge of Khazad-Dum.

Very John Howe-like. Which is a compliment, since he's my favorite Tolkien illustrator by far. He also was one of the two illustrators (along with Alan Lee) who were the art directors for the Peter Jackson films. Which is where he concieved of the body looking like lava - hardened black on the top, but molten inside, cracking to vent heat.

i like this kind of artwork the most; a single person, obviously the protagonist, fighting al lot larger humanoid abomination, but still seemingly surrounded, and on very impractical and instable terrain. it makes the feeling of despair and thus heroism even bigger.
