my mother used to have an ashtray a lot like this back when she was still smoking. i very much like the way it stands out against the pure black background - very effective, and it brings focus to the interesting patterns of light and shadow inside the ashtray, where a defined background may distract from that.
althought, i would say that i'd like to see this rotated and cropped a bit, either so it's perfectly symmetrical, or so it's noticeably off-center. symmetry tends to be satisfying to the eye, as are original angles (most of the time). when an image is just slightly off-kilter, however, it adds a certain degree of unease to the image.
i think a shot like this, so heavy in shadowplay, would look very good symetrical, and most definitely worth a fav.

personally, i'd like it all symmetrical-like. i like symmetry. it's perty.
but for some, that's not an "artistic" enough approach - it seems nowadays symmetry is almost considered a fopah (or however you speel it), which is a shame, because it's a powerful aesthetic tool.

try rotating it and cropping it a little in photoshop - or another photoediting program - if you have one.

oh my god my very first constuctive critisism i love you for that ! the thing about this picture is that i turned it around a million times but i always ended up looking at it from the top so i asumed it was ment to be this way, but i get what ur saying
