Description Came upon this almost intact skeleton in the woods. I think it's a moose, or maybe a caribou. Antlers and hooves were missing, so I couldn't tell.

From his jaw structure, he looks like a moose. Especially that spinal column. You should google moose skeletons. It's interesting how different they are from other deer species.

The things I could do with a skeleton of this size! This would make one hell of a wearable piece.

Awesome find! I agree with sizzybubbles. From what I can see of the skull it definitely looks like a big cow moose. Don't suppose you kept the skull or any of the bones? Interested in selling them if you did?

VeridianSea In reply to Shadyufo [2010-06-15 05:01:04 +0000 UTC]

No, I didn't keep them. We came across dozens of skulls, hooves and bits of fur from where hunters had killed them last fall and in previous years. It never occurred to me to bring them home because they're so common. Plus many still have bits of rotten meat and skin on them. Bleh! This was the first time I'd seen the whole body, though. Hunters take that part home.

I'd likewise be interested in anything you'd ever bring home... I wish my town had finds like this! Sadly, we don't have much of a "woods" or "trail area" in my IMMEDIATE area

Keep me in mind in the future if you'd be interested in bringing any of the skulls or other bones back to sell them. I'd definitely be interested in them!

Thats just awesome. It's so intact!
Very cool find.

I'm thinking it maaaaay be a moose cuz of its big nasal opening. And what appears to be a hump on its back.

The hump was what made me think it was a moose, although it was kinda small. Maybe a juvenile or just an undersized adult. It was about the size of a big caribou.

You make me even more excited to hike in my woods!

Yay for hiking in the woods! It's amazing how many cool things are out there to see! I've seen foxes and otters and beavers and moose and caribou and tons of birds. My friend and I found a raven's nest a few weeks ago. If you have binoculars you can see the chicks. They've probably fledged by now. And I saw an osprey not too long ago. Sometimes I wish I could just hike all the time!

ShivaReaver In reply to VeridianSea [2010-06-15 04:18:51 +0000 UTC]

We have a lot of creatures out here. Coyotes, Foxes, Squirrels, Birds, Deer, Moose, Chipmunks...typical forest animals. And no one hikes in our woods (because it's actually a downward trench as you go), so I can just imagine the animals in it!

DANG IT. I have to hike tomorrow. I do. CURSE YOU.

You got any plans for the skeleton?

Naw, I left it where it was. I was actually on a work trip when I found it. I'm a geologist. Sometimes I get to do fieldwork, but mostly I'll be stuck in the office the rest of this summer. But I still hike every weekend for fun.

A hunter got to it first I'm guessing : p Well, now I can say i've seen a moose/caribou skeleton : D

VeridianSea In reply to Nefariously-Labeled [2010-06-15 03:59:16 +0000 UTC]

I don't think it was a human hunter. Coyotes or bears may have been at it, although the bones didn't look chewed. I think it may have actually died of natural causes. Moose have very few predators here besides people.

ah. Still, I'm kind of amazed at how the bones look completely fine
