I used Photoshop to make a layer mask with the photo and covered it with text, then added color to the text. Hope this helps

here is a tutorial I looked at a while back that does something similar. I didn't create layers for the mid tones and shadows, which they did in the youtube video, because it wasn't needed in this pic. I'll try to do some screenshots tutorials later on. thanks for the interests!
