Description I downloaded a trial of Photoshop CS5 and wanted to try out their new mixing brush. It's supposed to lay down color and mix the same way real paint would, presumably to compete with painter.

Adobe doesn't like competition do they? They created indesign to squash quark. Then Golive to compete with Dreamweaver, and when that didn't work they just bought macromedia. And they have their sights on painter. Photoshop even has a designer and painter workspace mode you can switch, bringing forth the panels they think you'll need more.
One the one hand it's nice adobe has all these programs, and they all have a similar look and functionality. But on the other hand they might not be able to get away with charging $600 a program if they had a little more competition.

Anyway, back to mixing brush. It's definitely interesting. Has a range of different brush styles, it can smoothly blend colors even are polar opposites. And you can really drag the color around, almost like spread it with a pallet knife.
When painting in a larger file, there's a little bit of a delay in rendering the effect though, and my computer is less then a year old.

Both programs have their pros and cons, it's a little hard to describe, you have to play with both tools and see which you like better. A the moment I still prefer painter, but I've been working with that a lot longer, I know how to compensate for it's issues, Photoshop's tool I probably need to play around with more.
