Description I really liked the new Sherlock Holmes movie, and I figure that the biggest improvement they made from other versions was that Watson was smart, not bumbling, and Holmes was a young, active, almost insane man. So for this picture, I put my favorite Holmes (Basil Rathbone) with the best Watson I've seen (Jude Law). I couldn't decide between just foggy hills or London for the background, so I've got foggy London, which is right between the two.

Enjoy...

HAHA! Cute!

Watson: Simple reasoning, a child could do it.
Holmes: Not your child, Watson.

Awe... SOME. Basil Rathbone is my favorite Holmes, too. He just has this air of... dignity. You did a great job drawing him. Especially that schnozz of his.

Jude Law was my favorite Watson, until I saw Martin Freeman. He's just the most adorable Watson I've ever seen.

I'm glad you like it!!
THE SCHNOZZ!!!! i have a profound respect for men who make that sort of nose look good (Mark Strong and Richard Armitage are on the list, which is really funny, because all three of them have played Robin Hood's nemesis)

And Martin Freeman! He's brilliant! They could not have chosen a better man for a modern Watson But I can't choose between him and Jude Law...

All three DID play Guy of Gisbourne! That's so crazy and awesome. I personally love prominent/interesting/unique noses. I must admit, Richard Armitage was one of the few reasons I made myself watch the third season of "Robin Hood". (And also, because I love Much. )

And I've always liked Martin Freeman, so I'm probably a little biased.

okay, just because it's absurdly entertaining: [link]

yeah, Will Scarlet stayed behind so Guy was the best reason I could come up with for watching the third season.

And Martin Freeman is great - I loved him as Arthur Dent! - and he's gonna be Bilbo! OMG MARTIN FREEMAN AS BILBO AND RICHARD ARMITAGE AS THORIN OAKENSHIELD okay i'm done.

Woa, Jude Law and Basil Rathbone, nice team
I really like your picture, you captured Basil Rathbones expression very well!

Thank you! Rathbone was a bit difficult - the picture I had of him was much higher quality than the one of Jude Law, so I initially had a whole lot more detail in his face and I had to fix that so he wasn't staring quite so intently at the side of Watson's face I ended up just roughing it up with my pencil after I noticed he looked better from a distance, when it looked like there were more shadows.

You've done it very well! Hope you'll decide to draw them together again soon!
I think it's the only pictures on DA which shows Basil Rathbone and Jude Law in one picture

Lovely picture XD I think the sketchy style suits them. I have to say that the new movie was'nt the best that I have seen, but I won't deny that I enjoyed it. But I have to say that the best Holmes and Watson are Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke, even Peter Cushing's Holmes is quite good. I also like the russian Holmes played by Vasily Livanov, he stayed true to books as well. But once again nice drawing and I have to agree that Jude Law is among the best Watsons so far.

Thank you! I think the thing that impressed me most about Rathbone was his disguises - he could transform his face as easily as the character in the stories I've come to love. And I drool over his voice. But he was the very first Holmes I saw, and he really left an impression on me.

I agree, Rathbone could really change character as you change clothes. He is also one of my favorite Holmeses.

Yeah! that is what I liked about the movie too! He was finally energic, insane and active like in the books .. not the sucker in checkered coat :3

Nice drawing though, I like the scratchy style. Though I gave a more shot in the shading. Like start by using one light source and shade it all from it. For example here the lantern above the door, it would give it a real nice dramatic kick IMO :3

Keep up! Hope to see more work from ya

VesperBond In reply to Phoeline [2010-09-04 23:29:36 +0000 UTC]

I had a bit of trouble converting the shadows from the various reference pictures I used - the two of them were originally outside on a sunny day, and Basil was facing the opposite direction in a studio portrait, wearing a beret. But, definitely, if I had shading skills, one light source would have been a knockout I'm glad you like the scratchy-ness; I'm too lazy to blend, and I prefer the rough, sharp effect, anyway.

Phoeline In reply to VesperBond [2010-09-04 23:36:42 +0000 UTC]

Well the shading eventually comes in when it is tried out a few times but I agree it is the most hard thing to learn i think.

Yeah i do, people all blend. It's boring .. this is something new and it's energic ^^

Watson in the books is a very intelligent scientist and doctor, and this movie stayed very close to the stories.
