I wish I was a photographer. I mean, I've got a Nikon N55 with the standard lens that comes with it (can't think of what type it is off the top of my head) and I've used it, but I've never really had anything to use it for. If I got the chance, i would gladly like to work with her. (even though it probably would never happen)

You can be a photographer! You've got the camera, you've got the skill, you just need to take the pictures! And maybe need a model if you want to take portraits. You never know, the chances are a little unlikely since you live in USA and we live in Canada though :S
But you can find models any where! Check out Model Mayhem

well, yes; I CAN be a photographer, but I've never had a model to work with or anything to photograph. I would just take random shots. Oh, and I wouldn't recommend trying to take pictures while driving a fully loaded water truck. I wouldn't say I've got the skill for it; maybe with some more practice. But that's why I need models Depending on what part of Canada, it might be more possible than you think. Do you know how far you are from Minnesota? Also, I'm poor. I don't think I could find anyone on there that would work for free. not a one on one thing anyways.

You just gotta ask a sibling, friend, girlfriend, anyone! Hahah no kidding. Practice practice practice, explore and try new things! Take pictures of weird things and if the picture doesnt look right try again with a new angle. Oh yeah were on the complete other side of the continent
