I sense those soldiers might be a bit inhibited. Who would want to kill such a gorgeous lady?  But I doubt that she's inhibited.

Your Roman soldiers need miniskirts or as I call them "manminis". Otherwise it's not a bad render.

The first link didn't work but the second one did. I also looked up braccae so you do have a point. The "mini-skirt" seems to have been more of a long shirt and is probably the same light garment worn as a kind of base layer for a toga. I would recommend lengthening the shirts a bit longer. Times like these make me wish I had access to my back issues of Ancient Warfare Magazine.

I don't know if this link will work but this page sells the outfit which - if accurate - would be a handy reference. I've downloaded for myself.

Thanks for the replies and your patients by the way. Military history buff and *gasp* wargamers like me can go on a bit.

V is correct. As the Romans moved further north they encountered much colder weather [Hadrian's Wall is in the north of England remember].
Also after the 3rd Century the weather in Europe grew much colder and the Alpine Passes became very difficult to cross even in Spring and late autumn so the Romans had to adapt the garb of their troops. As well as the Empire declined economically at the same time as the weather deteriorated [these factors are probably connected tho' precisely how in detail is still argued about] and despite more and more resources being devoted to the military, uniforms began to vary from place to place. In addition Barbarians recruited into the Empire's forces as auxiliaries, an increasing phenomena after end of the 3rd Century crisis, tended to retain their own weapons and much of their own original apparel.

My goal is to improve accuracy and not to make disparaging comments or being hostile. I want to make that clear to prevent any misunderstandings.

I agree things got more than a little hairy for the Romans during the Crisis of the Third Century. I was just offering some suggestions for future renders. I think "barbarian" Roman Legionaries would be a very interesting subject for future works. I actually like the look of the late Romans a bit more than the "classic" view. They have more varied and exotic look to them.

I did not mean to suggest you were, my aim was the same as yours... the Roman Empire lasted for about six hundred years* so there is a lot of variety in how the army looked.

*even after the so-called 'fall' of the Western Empire in 476 which later historians keep taking for the 'end' the actual Romans in the East still thought it feasible to re conquer Italy and central north Africa at least and Justinian set about doing it! It is their defeat by the advancing forces of Islam in the 7th Century that finally puts an end to it being 'Roman' in any real sense and it 'reinvents itself' as the Byzantine State.

As I recall the Byzantines still identified as "Roman" though the meaning had obviously changed. If you want to get really picky the Roman Empire ended in 1453 with the fall of Byzantium though I think that is pushing things.

I would not dispute what you have said here.
