Goliath is the leader of the Clan of Gargoyles living in Manhattan. In the year 994, they lived in a castle in medieval Scotland alongside humans, until many of them were killed by betrayal and the remainder magically frozen in stone until the castle "rises above the clouds." A millennium later, billionaire David Xanatos purchased the castle and had it reconstructed atop his skyscraper, awakening the six remaining Gargoyles. In trying to adjust to the new world, they are aided by a sympathetic NYPD officer, Elisa Maza, and come into conflict with the plotting Xanatos, as well as many other supernatural threats. Because of the betrayal, Goliath is reluctant to trust humans, but becomes very close with Elisa.
