During most of the game, I kept thinking of the book/movie "Blindness" which was also about a breakdown of civilization. In the "Winter" section, when I saw Ellie kill with a knife, I thought of American McGee's Alice from 2000. "The Last of Us" is far more horrifying because it has just enough realism to be plausible. I think it should have been a movie rather than a video game, however. It would have been the absolute best movie of the "Zombie" genre of all time.

I don't own a PS3 and would never have gotten through the relentless combat, so I watched it as MKIceAndFire's video walkthrough on YouTube:

Sorry I took so long to reply, but most comments I get are for thanking me for a favorite. I rarely get anything else so I didn't notice this was here. I hear what you're saying and I agree with a lot of it, but I disagree that it should be a movie. I'd like to see a movie version done ONLY because I wish more people could get into this amazing story, and at that a book would probably be more effective. I have nothing against movies except for their length. The last of us, as you know, is a long story. Movies do a very bad job at long stories because they rush things, cut things out, and/or add new things based on what the director sees fit. Also, there is much in the game in the form of notes and letters and optional dialogue that each player is free to pay as much or as little attention to as they wish. To me, that freedom is important. I believe with the utmost certainty that video games are the only media capable of providing a sufficient window into the lives of Joel and Ellie in a way that doesn't feel forced or rushed. That said, the last of us was a spectacular journey, no matter the media, and I'm glad I was able to go along for the ride.

It would be absolutely impossible to turn "The Last of Us" into a single movie. Even if that movie were a four-hour marathon with an intermission, I think it would be impossible. It would have to be a whole series of movies. I think you're right that a book would be more effective. Perhaps a series of diary entries by Ellie with the book ending with a long single diary entry by Joel who swears that someday he'll give the diary to Ellie and allow her to learn the truth of what really happened.

I wonder if there's ever been a video game before that gave players as much to think about at the ending as this one.
