Description White and grassy cliffs usually shine and overlook rainy days from their advanced height on the world, but today it was overcast for the land below, causing a dense and ominous fog to hover. A rumble of leather casts a weak shadow as it skims the hills before landing and stamping a colossal weight onto the mossy coat. Broadhead you fatty, quit makin so much noise when you walk.

Intended to make a monster hunter theme, but didn't get there with Broad's design, so switched to mimic Arvalis's style. I think I spent more time on rocks than I did on Broad, still happy with how it turned out.Β

I like that you've made a truly reptilian dragon by making him/her lizard-hipped instead of bird-hipped, like a lot of dragons are depicted (in particular, dragons that move in a rather feline way).Β

Mind you, I like bird-hipped dragons too, but the attention to the varying anatomies really makes this stand out.Β

You mean Saurischian vs Ornithischian, or strictly lizard vs birds? Or the lacking of the pubis/ischium bones?

I just basically looked at crocodile and rhinoceros for squat, muscled, thick skin characterisics while sticking to an old fashion dragon idea rather than anatomically 'correct' guesswork. I did try to give fatty here big wings to fit his skeleton, so if he lost some weight he might be able to fly on cliffs rather than climb them.Β

Oh! That does remind me, however. First, he could just be a glider instead of an all-out flier; crawling to the top of the cliff and then leaping off to get places quickly.Β
Alternatively, he could be so fat because he's an organic version of, say, a hydrogen balloon, to lower his density and assist with flight. Dunno whether he'd get a fire breath, but that could additionally assist with that, then. There. Yep.Β

My second point is also a fairly popular explanation for dragon flight, it appears.Β

it would take a lot of hydrogen to lift that much weight though. There was a story I watched on nickolodeon when I was super young about a kid discovering dragons, and they'd inflate themselves like pufferfish and float away.Β

But gliding would take him so far before he decides he doesnt want to climb back. lol His background I havent gotten into sharing, but he's a spoiled 'pet' dragon, raised by a wizard. He gets his food delivered to him.

Doesn't need to fly solely by blimp; the hydrogen could just add a little edge to assist in the fire breath.

I like to go with the explanation that dragons have evolved super-strong, super-light-weight variations of scales, scutes, bones, and muscles. And have really, really big wings to compensate. When someone asks what the structures of these improved body parts are actually made of, I'll begin to ramble in a way that suggest I've taken more than one course in biology before excitedly exclaiming "look over there!"Β

Also, now I'm really curious as to what these backstories are, like I've seen mentioned in other images. Do you plan on writing short stories for them? Are they all in the same world? Have I missed where you're putting these stories up? I think the idea is cool.Β

its hard to describe what a myth could look like if it was real. I would expect unexpected behaviors and biological functions never before seen. But its always fun to guess and let imagination go wild with a little bit of foundation!

I havent actually gotten around to writing out back stories for majority of my characters. I believe I overthink a lot, and never get it pinned down before I change something.Β

I meant in terms of Saurischian vs Ornithischian hips. I think. It's been a really long time since I learned that stuff, and by "learned," I mean "watched a LOT of dinosaur movies, a couple of which were even educational." As I vaguely recall, therapods (bipedal dinosaurs like the Tyrannosaurus Rex) were . . . huh. They were lizard-hipped.Β

Well, shoot. I'm now a bit more confused than I was before. I was WRONNNNGGGGG! ("In the middle of the barren field, face to the sky, I cry out, anguish written upon my features, as I fall to my knees. Lighting flashes across the sky, followed by the earth-shattering boom of the rolling thunder.")

Well, I guess I should say that it more resembles modern reptiles (the ones with legs on, I mean) than modern mammals or birds. Is what I'm getting at. Which I like.Β

Ya, its easier to recognize shapes vs terminology. Here was just playing with the elbows/knees struck outwards kind of dragon which I like cause it strays away from the usual lion body that most dragons take. for the most part, he just looks like an oridinary dragon though. 4 legs, 2 wings, horns and claws and a big tail. xD

Well, it looks good. Is what I'm saying. He(she?)'s preeeetttty. And fat.Β

Fun fact: Lizards store fat in their tails; looking at the tail is a pretty good indicator of how well the lizard is fed, in many cases.Β

Definitely fun, started it a month ago but only took a few sittings. I didn't have to move or redraw anything, or adjust colors from the sketch, so it went fairly fast. Thank you!

*squeals a little*

Β Just blowing up the picture to 6k x 4k pixels and working on details on small level while looking at your totodile+evolutions picture. Any bigger and my comp would run slow, but its very interesting how you do your work. Definitely have thought about doing your class.Β

Mushu: Hey! Dragon. *Dra-gon*, not lizard. I don't do that tongue thing.

lol but glad I nailed it. x3 not easy to do large scale lizards with no living references to guess at scale work.Β

Im still happy I went with green instead of orange for Broad's belly. <3 ty

The angle gave me more thought than anything, cause in monster hunter, they're always looking UP at the monster.Β

And Im plesantly pleased with myself on the shine on the middle rock, but now Broad looks dull. xD

And yay for suprising glee in inbox!
