Description For the record, I didn’t hate The Last Airbender movie. I simply didn’t like it because the lack of connection with the characters, and the straying-away from the original, spoiled it for me. Really, a bunch of Earthbenders doing the Macarena to hurl a small rock…

My main gripe is that the characters were bland, and that I simply never cared about any of them from start to finish. Even when Yue died I couldn’t relate one bit, in fact Ong could have died and I wouldn’t have cared. I admit that the special effects were efficient, that the actors seemed to be doing their best, and that Zuko was convincing enough but that doesn’t make up for the whole movie.

It should be noted that Bryan and Mike were asked what they thought of the movie in an interview. They replied that they hadn’t been involved in it, and that they were moving on to new projects. Enough said…

I am not going to respond to attempts to drag me into pointless discussions. If you liked the movie I respect that. You have your opinions and I have mine.

Shamaylan should have taken lessons from how Peter Jackson tackled The Lord of the Rings. The way he tackled ATLA looked like a list of scenes with no flow between them, plus he clearly knows less about ATLA than fans of the show. ATLA could have been split in 6 movies and they would have sold.

Thankfully, most of the money The Last Airbender generated seemed to be from duped fans of the show seeing as how Nickelodeon basically said that if a sequel to The Last Airbender ever comes to pass, M. Night Shamaylan will not be the director.

Apparently, The Last Airbender damaged Shamaylan's reputation so badly that when people saw his name in trailers for The Devil Inside (which he did not direct) there were reports of laughter and groaning in the theaters.  In fact, the fact that M. Night Shamaylan directed After Earth seems to be the main reason why that movie did so poorly at the box office (by Will Smith standards).

The Last Airbender movie should have been something great, if it had followed the original, but Mr.Shamasomething had to go and make his own story.  I still don;t get the Earthbenders doing the Macarena...

After Earth was a big disappointment to me, I expected more action from a Will Smith movie

I was thinking more along the lines of forcing him to actually watch the show, as many times as it takes for him to get what it's about. Then he'll have to apologize to each and every Avatard in person, mean it and wear a FAIL t-shirt for the rest of his life.

And as a final punishment, force him to act in one of those Scary-Movies parodies

My say about the movie? It's a movie full of failed potential that practically betrayed me for backing it up. I thought it was going to be half-decent, and...well, I'm disappointed that I feel betrayed.

vick330 In reply to Lombax786 [2011-03-02 15:06:48 +0000 UTC]

That movie had no personality, it was bland and uninspired, which is a shame due the financial means put at the moviemakers' disposal. Just when I thought nothing could suck more than the remake of Clash Of The Titans, I rented the Dragonball movie. And then I thought that nothing could be as bad as those, but I was proved wrong by The Last Airbender

I really didn't enjoy this movie. It ruined A:TLA for me if I'm honest. I still love the series, but the movie was a serious let down. My biggest problem was Katara. She had no real purpose in it. You could have taken her away and it still would have worked...

vick330 In reply to AvatarShipper13 [2011-02-03 20:10:48 +0000 UTC]

In this movie you could have taken away most characters and nobody would have noticed. Not that they had much to do with the animated series anyway. Fortunately I have DVDs of the show, so I'm healing my psyche with them after that movie

The main criticism I've read is that Mr.Night is a drama-director, and not an action-director. People should stick with what they're good at, and experiment on their own time.

Mr.Shayamsomething is a good dramatic director, but he doesn't know a thing about directing action movies. My guess is he tried to make this into a serious movie, but the animated series was fun because the characters didn't take themselves too seriously.

I know, Dev Patel was the only one that seemed any good in terms of acting, but even then it wasn't his best performance. It was as if no-one was even trying. Another criticism I've had with the movie was the soundtrack. Don't get me wrong, it had good music, but it would have been nice if they used some musical cues from the show, like the opening theme from the first episode. Plus I still can't get over the mispronounciations of character names. If Avatar: The Last Airbender had been a book series, where how you pronounce the names is up to debate and personal opinion, I wouldn't care. But the fact is it was an animated TV series, where the character's names were being said a hundred times per episode, and that to me is inexusable.

Shyamalama-ding-dong has already pissed off the A:TLA fans as it is; working on a sequel is just asking for a death wish.

DOTB18 [2011-01-24 06:17:28 +0000 UTC]

Aside from the lack of character development, hardly any of the actors were "in character" to begin with. One example would be Sokka; in the show he's a sarcastic cynic and comic relief, but in the movie he's boringly serious and any attempt at humor seemed forced and pitifully dull. None of the conversations seemed natural, everything being said sounded like a statement. Finally, the movie was just too short. For the most part, epic adventure movies tend to be at least 2 hours long, usually longer. But at an hour-and-a-half, it just didn't have enough time to properly convey the story.

And one more thing; even if an adaptation diverges, even severly, from the original source material, it could still be good on its own. A perfect example is How to Train Your Dragon. The Last Airbender, on the other hand, is an epic fail, through and through.

vick330 In reply to DOTB18 [2011-01-24 15:40:51 +0000 UTC]

Right, and you hit the nail dead-on by saying that, "everything being said sounded like a statement". There was no emotion in the acting, except from Zuko/Dev Patel. And the Lord Of The Rings movies were 3 hours long each, so why try to cram ATLA in such a short flic?

And to top things off, a sequel is coming if rumor proves right

"...bunch of Earthbenders doing the Macarena to hurl a small rock…"

I take it you saw this glorious video? [link]

I greatly disliked the movie because, regardless of whether it stayed true to the original series or not, nothing in Shama-llama's version made me feel anything for the characters or their fates. Zuko could have killed Aang, Aang could have killed Zuko, Katara could've fallen off Appa--I would not have cared. That, to me, is Shamalamaljaoihjoa's real crime. I'm fine with taking "creative liberties", but if they severely weaken the plot or take away all character motivation, they should not be done.

Rant is done
