Description The runes say 'May Thor Ward You, and May Heimdall Watch Over You.' If anybody sees any typos or mistakes, please let me know. I'm confident in my stuff, except for the V sound.

The biggest mistake is that you're using the wrong runeset and the English language, but other than that it looks ok. :3

so which runeset would you suggest?

Um... the Viking age runeset, perhaps? Also known as "Younger Futhark".

Well as i only speak English maybe i should use the saxon Futhorc.

Combining some sorta replication of Urnes knotwork with the Elder Fuhark is quite illogical for me. รจ_รช

one typo but its not a big deal. you only need one "l" at the end of heimdall's name.

Graenfur [2010-07-21 10:51:06 +0000 UTC]

looks good.
oh and also, you don't use double letters [like double L in Heimdall] in elder futhark.

The amount of work you put into this is pretty impressive. Great knotwork and knowledge of the runes.

Really nice work!
I've noticed some things you should fix though, the second "leg" of the U letters should be longer or else they might be mistaken for an L. To get the V sound you could use an F with a small dot between the vertical line and the first (shortest) diagonal line.
Again nice work I really like it.

for the V sound, do you mean put the dot above the top arm of the F rune, or the bottom arm, because the way I write them the arms usually end up the same length.

ichbincm In reply to vicskywalker [2009-03-14 00:56:44 +0000 UTC]

Yes, between the top diagonal arm and the vertical arm.
I drew a quick picture to show you how I meant, it also show how you can make the Y sound. [link]

in elder futhark there are no dots

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

ichbincm In reply to Graenfur [2010-07-21 13:11:08 +0000 UTC]

Partly correct. At first the dotted runes didn't exist, but as the language started to develop and before the younger futhark were in use, the dots were introduced to separate the similar sounds. Later on when the younger futhark came in use, the dotted runes started to become more common.

I haven't seen any description of these dotted elder futhark runes.
Could you give me a link or something?

ichbincm In reply to Graenfur [2010-08-01 02:12:27 +0000 UTC]

Unfortunately not. This is something that I've noticed on two runestones here in Sweden, they were dated to somewhere around the 7th century.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Graenfur In reply to ichbincm [2010-09-30 09:31:34 +0000 UTC]

so you figured out what those dotted runes mean/sound just form the runestones without any given description of these dotted runes?

There's plenty of books with information about the futharks and futhorcs sounds and their use. When writting in modern English, it's best to use the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc 'cause it has more "english" sounds than the Scandinavian. I've read in those books about the use of dots in runes, and as Ichbincm points out, they were used for producing new sounds as languages were evolving.
In the Anglo-Saxon runes, in the matter of divination, there's a whole new Aett commonly called "Hel's Aett" and it includes sounds as long A, Y (as in year), Kh or Ch (as in Scottish "loch"), Kw or Cw. and so on.
Greets!

Thanks, it's kinda a WIP at the moment, i want to sorta modernize it a little, change some of the flourishes, but still keep the over all Norse feel.
