In Neo Dixie a special delicate type of berry is grown usually called glass berries due to their transparent magenta appearance. Their fragile nature means they cannot be picked by machines but must be picked by human hands. Glass berries are extremely valuable as they can be used to produce a strong drug which can either be used as a painkiller or recreational drug. Neo Dixie use the convict lease system to lease out white prisoners as slave to farms to pick these berries.

Processing the berry juice to the highly valuable drug proved difficult to do with machinery. One needed a biological system. Neo Dixie scientists have found that by combining the juice in a special feed for human milking cows the right chemical is produced in the milk and pussy juice of hucows. Hence hucows are fed glass berries to produce the drug called "berry milk". It is made by extracting milk and pussy juice from hucows. The milk has to be refined to get the berry milk drug.

Demand for the drug has increased demand for prison labour and hucows in Neo Dixie. It has become a favored pain killed abroad although it is controversial due to the reliance on hucows in the production.

This drug may sound a little bit odd. Why does it exist? It came out a discussion I had with other contributors to the Neo Dixie world. There was talk about recreating a sort of old fashion slave plantation with slaves. The problem with that is that it isn't the 1800s anymore. Human labour is generally quite expensive in the modern world. Even more so in 2053 when this story takes place. Sure you don't have to pay slaves anything but you still need to house them and feed them. Often that will cost more than machines. The other challenge is that hucow farming can never be very efficient. A normal human produce around 1liter per hour. A cow has about 10x the mass of a woman and produce 28 liters of milk per day. So to match a cow in terms of mass a woman would need to produce about 2.8 liters of milk per day. So we could assume that for a hucow.

Either way I am not sure if hucows are a particularly profitable thing. Thus there may be a need for something that is very valuable in small quantities. Narcotics is just that. And narcotics have long been used in the medical industry for painkillers. Thus there is a potentially valuable dual usage. Either way if hucow could be involved in such production they are potentially a lot more economically valuable.
