Description A varg/nahual hybrid. Man, this guy has a whole backstory but I'm too tired to write it out right now.

Close up view can be seen here: [link]

Edit: ok, here's some of it. Varg and nahual are regional variations of "werewolves", with vargr coming from Nordic areas and nahual from S. America. "Vargr" meaning both wolf and outlaw, and should more properly be ulfhednar or hamrammr, but they picked the name themselves and I guess it just sounded cooler. Nahual/nagual is a generic mesoamerican term for shapeshifter, as close as I can get to what I intended, the Olmec "were-jaguar". They aren't actually wolves OR jaguars, they're humans with supercharged mitochondria that allow them to temporarily regress into a primitive, carnivorous simian form - the resemblance is pure convergence. The reason they look different is a combination of Bergmann's and Allen's laws (animals in cold environments tend to be bulkier and more heavily built, animals in warm regions tend to be more slender and long-limbed), plus the nahual have camo typical of ambush predators, etc, etc. Varg shade into the real ginormous ones that would be referred to as were-bears, and very much smaller, leaner types that might be called coyote or fox (American, East Asiatic), and African types that sort of resemble hyenas. But they're all the same critter, just as bulldogs and greyhounds are both dogs.

This guy is American, actually, and like a lot of us he's a mutt.

The anatomy looks a bit awkward, that's not *entirely* due to my lack of skills. Long torso without the typical human s-curve, proportionally short legs: vargr/nahual are quadruped so standing up like this isn't typical. It's done to look over things, or to intimidate.

Is it based on a 3D render or something, or did you just paint him from scratch? The lighting and detail seem very convincing. What's up with the background? The scene itself is nice, but I think there's some compression artefacts and it's so blurry.

I meant to add, I've been going through the gallery and updating some old stuff, so this will exist in a nicer version at some point (I hope!)

Nope, it's just painted - thanks! I did look at photos for reference, though. The background is just blurry . . . just threw it in there to fill the space.

wonderful, you did a great job suggesting detail and rewarding the viewer for taking their timing looking at the image. I think the feet and teeth are particularly successful.

The backstory's great as always. The act of standing to intimidate is something I'd normally attribute to primates, but if you can do it, why the hell not?

Just a random thought: have you ever drawn inspiration from more exotic/extinct carnivorous mammals? Besides the ones that co-existed with humans, there are much older, stranger ones with no equivalents today like mesonychids and creodonts.

I've also got to say I like the background in this one and think the creature fits in well!

The primate-ness is completely intentional. I didn't go into the whole backstory here but my version of "werewolves" are completely primate. They're humans who can revert to a carnivorous primate ancestor, sort of what would have resulted if chimp-like ancestors had evolved to compete with lions and hyenas directly instead of scavenging and using tools. Personally I would much rather be in a small cage with a wolf than a chimp - chimps are SCARY and can be vicious as hell.

I do love prehistoric mammalian carnivores, I've got some pictures of them here and there in my gallery and I even run a group devoted to them: [link] It'd be hard picking my favorite one.

The back story is awesome, you put so much effort and study into the things you do before you do them. It amazes me. And so does this, I especially love the feet, you didn't go for canine all the way (which you stated it only bares a resemblance right? Oh god I am so stupid. xD) looks like a mix of animal with the human toes in there...
I'd hate to see this coming after me at night. D:
