Description The hill in the foreground of this picture is called Maungakiekie, or One Tree hill, there is no more tree on one tree hill, the tree was asaulted and died, it was air-lifted off the hill to a better place. The image has the Auckland skytower (center), and Mount Eden (left) in the background.

A Totara tree said to have been planted in the 1600's first gave the hill its name, Sir John Logan Campbell in 1840 officially named the hill One Tree Hill. In 1852 the tree tragically died, according to popular belief after an attack by protesting workmen.
In the 1870's Sir John Logan Campbell planted a group of Pinus radiata to protect native trees, but only the Pines survived.
The 5 pine trees were constantly attacked until only one remained in 1962, and the hill again literally became one tree hill.
The Tree was vandalised and assaulted frequently including attempts to blow up the tree with explosives in the 1970's.
The Tree survived chainsaw attacks in 1994, and 1999. But by 2000 the tree was so sick, it became unstable and deemed unsafe. Careful study prooved the danger and a decision was made to remove the tree.

One tree hill stands treeless now, bare earth and a hole depicting the area where a poor pine once stood.
