I'd be careful. This is fantastic but Disney is super picky when it comes to people making things of their characters. They sandblasted a mural off of a wall in a daycare for crying out loud.

I'd swear there's an echo.
www.snopes.com/disney/wdco/day…
the murals were taken down because it made the daycare look like a disney affiliate, which it wasn't. Also it would have allowed other people to do the same if they left it up. What they did was a PR mistake and allowed Hanna Barabara a leg up in advertising. I'm pretty sure that if they had a huff over one sculpt it wouldn't look too good, considering now there's an internet, which there wasn't when the mural incident took place.
but awesome - so now you can tell that to all the other people who sell hand made disney prints, kitch, clothing, etc with impunity the exact same thing. I've sat next to people at cons who make a living selling non-disney art prints of disney (pixar / square enix) characters.
At least this is a one of a kind, Objet d'art and can't / won't be reproduced, let alone the only disney item in my gallery.

There wasn't a need to be angry about it, people get touchy when you make things of their copyrights. I've said the same to everyone who put them up, so sorry for not wanting artists sued.

VIIStar In reply to TheDayDreamer363 [2013-09-19 03:32:58 +0000 UTC]
there's a slight difference between angry and irritated. I'm irritated at hearing the mural myth every time i turn around, with no one actually knowing what happened or bothering to look it up.
I have ONE sculpt of a disney character in my ~entire~ gallery (ok, three if you count the individual characters in the one piece) and suddenly i'm hot market for being sued. trust me, i'm positively the least on the radar person out there if you look at all the merch being ripped off just on etsy alone.
If they sued (technically a cease and desist letter comes first, but that's legalese) over one sculpt I'd be almost delighted at the amount of publicity it would net me. If they could send me a letter it means they know I'm out here, creating stuff their fans like.
And if you take the time to scour devart (not just pick on stuff that makes it to the front page, i hope) to tell everyone that they're going to be sued.... def need a hobby. that's way too much time to bother

right? GOD, if i hear that mural story ONE more time.... *incoherent screaming*
there's a HUGE difference between loading something up on shapeways or one of those print sites to be reproduced en masse forever vs. a one off custom. i'm barely competing with their merch, i can't work that fast or that cheap! now... if i had the arms of an Indian goddess... *thinking*.... >B}c
if I get a supplier in china to mass produce stuff like this on the cheap, THEN i'll be a target. >_<

Exactly, I don't see anything wrong with what you do. I heard Obama is trying to pass a law that will make even posting anything that is copyrighted a federal offense, maybe that's at least one reason why people are getting weird about it :/
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
VIIStar In reply to starfiregal92 [2013-09-20 01:47:02 +0000 UTC]
i'm not familiar with that law if it were true, but that would be funny considering his own dust up with the hope poster! good luck enforcing that one - must be written by the prison industrial complex...
the huge companies don't need MORE money and it just squashes creativity...
if you think about it, copyright is good to protect innovation during the life of the creator, but after some time it should go into the public domain. I mean really - with such strong copyright protection would disney be able to use all the hans christian anderson and grimm fairytails for free? by the logic they use now some of their money should go to the creator's family as royalties! but nope, they got theirs so fuck the rest of us XD
not to mention the blatant rip off of the lion king from the kimba the white lion! the hypocrisy is rich.
the only one with the moral high ground is miyazaki - original or licensed from books!

starfiregal92 In reply to VIIStar [2013-09-20 01:57:16 +0000 UTC]
I completely agree with you. They don't need to keep everything to themselves until the end of the world, I mean really..
And I'm not 100% sure about that supposed law, I only heard about it, never really looked into it. I doubt it would get passed anyway if it is true.
Disney (and I'm sure a lot of other companies) really only cares about money now, not the people/fans.
I heard about that Kimba show, my mother used to watch it when she was little. But I definitely see a serious comparison between it and the Lion King, I'm with you on that one. Disney doesn't every really seem to create anything completely on their own.
Miyazaki is a genius, I think! I love his work

yeah i can't see something that big getting by the internet... it would practically shut down sites like tumblr and facebook...
These days it's all about merchandising :/ when i saw pixar cars 2 and planes (and by saw i mean saw an ad for) i knew they wanted to sell toys... kinda disappoint.
OMG apparently they found like 500 fairy tails io9.com/5904138/trove-of-500-f…
everyone's rooting for disney's turnip princess XD
you know, i can't think of one of their movies not based on a previous tale... i'll have to think about it.
maybe silly symphonies?

starfiregal92 In reply to VIIStar [2013-09-22 20:39:06 +0000 UTC]
It would definitely shut down DA too (which would suck pretty badly)
I though the same things with those. I just couldn't believe when I saw the ad for planes, and that snail movie called Turbo, that was just pathetic.
That's interesting, I didn't know that. The Turnip Princess sounds pretty good, we all know Disney could make it a good movie.
I honestly can't think of one either, I thought just maybe Mary Poppins until I looked it up and found out it was first a book series that started in the 30's

not specifically for disney, but i'm relatively new to sculpting (4 years in december) and i like being around other sculptors. I audited a class with norm decarlo, old pixar head of sculpture dept, and learned SO many advanced tricks and tips for materials - it was enlightening.
I learned to sculpt so late in my MFA degree that I never got to really be around sculptors (i was illustration department, not animation) and a job at disney, or pixar, or laika, dreamworks, etc, would fix that ^^
you never know! lightening does strike!

I absolutely love that there are different finishes on various parts. Take for example Ariel's hair. Just that small touch alone adds so much distinction.
And speaking of her hair... the way you were able to 'capture' its flow is lovely. O.O
And flounder is SO cute presenting Ariel with that flower. I'd suggest, if you're able, to do a close-up shot of him since there isn't a very good angle in the 1/6th shots you did that capture his front >w<
Also, once more, you've did such an indescribably wonderful job on this one. Well done, well done, well done!!! ^o^

hoyis, ttly loving the different surfaces... did it for the dew droplet commish and really liked it. worked really well on ariel and i've started offering it for ponies as well - the virska and aj were the first after i decided to go ahead with matte body satin hair ^^ so now people get asked if they want the hair different than the body. the whole pony is covered with matte poly then i go over the glossier areas last.

hahah! That wasn't coined just recently was it? I mean, you're still working on Twilight vs. Chrysalis aren't you? XP
Having the capacity to do so many different things, styles, techniques, effects, and so on; and actually offering them in your commissions... on top of doing commissions under a wide selection of themes and series, it's wonderful; another layer of depth to an already existent variety. ~u~
You're awesome, but we both know you already knew that! lol X)
