Originally, he was just gonna beat the monster, but then I thought I would put a twist on the last page with the ettin being the one doing the pounding. I asked my neighbor what she thought would happen, and she guessed the latter on the first try, so it was still too obvious. So I picked a third, less obvious twist — he beat up his friend on accident. But the ettin still gets a surprise SMASH
