The depth of shadow in the background and the papery petals falling open - a lovely composition. It seems quite like a bed time story, frozen, like a winter night. The lighting is fantastic!

I wanted to keep the whole flower in focus, so used a small aperture (higher F number), but the background was a long way off and so remained nicely blurry. I liked that there is some blue sky to accentuate the pinks and just a little gold in the one petal and flower center to represent the primary colour triad.
I think what I love most about this breed of magnolias is the delicate flowers that are early blooming when a lot of the world is still angular and bare. It is like opening to the beginning of a favourite chapter.
