Description Haven't painted a pterosaur in some time so i broke the drought with this toothy terror. I really like envisioning these guys with all kinds of wattles and frills. Probably not likely but then again there are some bizarre displays in our animal kingdom currentlyΒ
*DISCLAIMER: I am NOT nor am I trying to be a paleoartist. Regardless of what scientific evidence there is or isnt, these are purely speculator/fantastical interpretations. Wattles, crests, frills, scales or feathers are simply exploratory and in the vain of 19th century depictions of dinosaurs. Β

Reminds me a lot of David Peters' "reconstructions". You should look him up and do some artwork based on his stuff, that would look really cool in your style

speculation aside, there is one actual inaccuracy, the membranes between legs werent connected to the tail too in early pterosaurs, in other words, the membranes were connected between the legs without actually touching the tail, the tail was over top.

This picture featured heavily in one of my distressing nightmares last nig... the last time I slept. I was in a park, the park bench balancing uncomfortably on my crotch, when I took note of a young couple and their child walking. The child says "Mr. Banana Head Bird!" and pointed. The couple looked at me as if I was to blame for whatever it was. The pterosaur than flew on the bench, the slight increase in weight suddenly very urgent. I stare at him for being so rude, and am about to ask him to fly away, when one of the fish in his mouth lifts up it head and says ( in the characteristic deep voice of dream fish ) "What the fuck are YOU looking at?"

Dream ends.

Integumentary accuracy aside, this is a really cool depiction of a very cool pterosaur. Don't let the criticism get you down. You're not aiming for realism and, so long as you remain up front about it, that isn't a problem to me.Β

Thank you. I know the criticism is coming from a good place or at least attempting to. I try to be as transparent as possible that these are meant to be fantasy interpretations, hence the disclaimer but some people are just very quick to criticize, which is fine.
But thank you for saying that and great use of the word Integumentary!Β

If you alter the entire animal to basically being the oposite of what it was in life, it goes beyond "speculative"/"fantastical"

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Vincent-Covielloart In reply to Inmyarmsinmyarms [2016-05-28 13:20:50 +0000 UTC]

I didn't alter it's skeletal structure. The only thing that is altered, based off of current "evidence" is the fact that i decided to give it a fleshy wattle and crest and extra frill on it's membrane. But you can think what you want. This is my depiction.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Inmyarmsinmyarms In reply to Vincent-Covielloart [2016-05-28 13:43:41 +0000 UTC]

No, you basically made an animal now established to be an aquatic, long and strong-winged, well muscled animal into a scrawny, skin-wrapped tree climber. Not to mention just bizarre creative choices like less toes and an added claw to the fifth toe.

Inmyarmsinmyarms In reply to apexpredator7 [2016-10-30 19:55:16 +0000 UTC]

Ah, taking a note from the classical petty criticism dismissal, I see.

Paleoart should be educative. Keep in mind these were real animals, not fantasy monsters.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

apexpredator7 In reply to Inmyarmsinmyarms [2016-10-31 16:41:11 +0000 UTC]

Why should it be? He clearly said that it was supposed to be fantasy and isn't misleading anyone, its an enjoyable piece and drawing inaccurate paleoart isn't hurting anyone. Stop being so conceited and get off your high horse although I'm pretty sure you're trolling.
Come back here and criticise him when you make accurate paleoart or become an esteemed palenotologist, until that point you have no right to judge
