Tritons have graced the walls and fountains of many ancient empires and were once believed to be the male counterpart of any number of mermaid species. However the Triton is actually a unique species of merfolk unto themselves.

Tritons are solitary and highly elusive and prefer to live relatively unseen, however come the warmth of spring the Triton will begin to seek out and claim small, densely rich territories. They will fight any and all rivals throughout the beginning of the mating season for these resource dense territories . With so few viable spots available only the strongest will win breeding rights. Upon this win a seemingly counter productive metamorphosis occurs.

The once large, dominant and aggressive male will become leith, and their anatomy will shift. The Triton will become a “birthing male.” Tritons are the sole race of Merfolk that are comprised entirely of males. It is only during the mating season that dominate males will become capable of bearing young. It is the dominant male who will pick a suitable suitor to sire young. The birthing male will remain in his new form until his fry are developed enough to fend for themselves.
