Description I do NOT own the photograph, I found it on this Site

The Great Western Railway 3541 class locomotives were designed by the GWR's Chief Locomotive Engineer William Dean in 1888 with 40 being built at Swindon Works. Basically they were a Broad Gauge version of the Standard Gauge 3521 class 0-4-4Ts. These locomotive were are first ordered as 0-4-2T tank engines to work on the Broad Gauge lines between Cornwall and Devon.

However beginning in 1890, the GWR began to rebuild these engines as 0-4-4T tank engines. These engines were later converted to standard gauge in 1892 when the GWR ended all broad gauge operations. In 1899, all 40 of these engines were rebuilt into 4-4-0 tender engines. Twenty six locos retained their parallel domed boilers while fourteen received new Standard No 3 parallel domeless boilers (later replaced by the taper barrel version of that type).

2 of these locomotives were involved in accidents. On 13 April 1895, locomotives 3536 and 3537, hauling the Cornishman, exceeded the speed limit by 24 miles per hour (39 km/h), damaging the track. A passenger train hauled by 3521 and 3548 consequently derailed between Doublebois and Bodmin Road, Cornwall. In 1898, locomotive 3542 derailed near Penryn, Cornwall whilst hauling a mail train. The locomotive rolled down an embankment, killing the driver. The accident was caused by a combination of the condition of the track and the locomotive oscillating. Following this the whole class was rebuilt as 4-4-0 tender locomotives. The locomotives continued service well beyond the 1923 grouping act. In 1934, the last locomotive was withdrawn from service and sadly none were preserved.

I always try to find rare and unusual locomotives, with the side of normal locomotives.
