I just got my Return of Marvel Legends Series 2 set last weekend and I was so happy with finally getting to build Arnim Zola that I just had to draw him as my next piece. While I've read only a couple of stories with Zola in it, I always loved the concept of the character and how bizarre he is that I couldn't resist to just try my hand on this classic Avengers villain.

Zola was a bit tricky to do, but I was happy to have experimented on his features and to just manipulate the proportions around as I pleased since he's basically a robot. The upper body features something of a tunic which I think I did well on considering all the folds and creases in there, and the legs are a different texture altogether, something much shinier. The purple parts of the costume and his space boots were really fun to do, and the little intricate details here and there really does help him pop some more. I also enjoyed detailing his robotic head, and I'm glad the effects turned out nice and now it looks like there's light coming out from the little yellow bulb of his. I also did the same with his little remote control and it makes that little doohickey stand out a little more than if it didn't have them.

The problem here was obviously the monitor on his torso, and I probably drew four different faces because it was so difficult to get right. I finally got one look that I felt content with and it looks as if he's come up with another grand experiment, and to make it look like a monitor I muted the transparency and added some light effects on it too to add a little more depth.

Arnim Zola is getting a huge boost in popularity now because of his new Marvel Legends action figure, and rightly so because a villain as classic as this deserves the praise. Whether it's his role in the Reborn storyline, or his cameos in EMH, I've really enjoyed the character, and hopefully we see him in a Captain America sequel in the future! Hail Hydra!!
